MIDI Play-along apps for iPad and your Disklavier

2011-11-28 by George Frederick Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

I am delighted to announce that Apple has approved several interactive Christmas iPad apps for sale in the iTunes Store. If you establish a MIDI connection between your Disklavier and the iPad, you can enjoy an interactive, play-along experience.

The current roster of apps includes the following:

Christmas Piano Play-Along 1
22 very easy Christmas pieces (Primer Level and Level 1 playing skills)

Christmas Piano Play-Along 2
22 easy and early intermediate Christmas pieces (Level 2 and Level 3 playing skills)

Carol of the Bells: Piano Play-Along
Several versions of Carol of the Bells arranged for different playing levels:
--one hand, melody only
--two hands, melody only
--easy play
--intermediate
--late intermediate

Jingle Bells: Piano Play-Along
Several versions of Jingle Bells arranged for different playing levels:
--one hand, melody only
--two hands, melody only
--easy play
--intermediate
--late intermediate

Each of these apps includes a special edition of Home Concert Xtreme. All of the features of HCX for iPad are included except for the fact that the apps only work with the bundled MIDI files. If you already have Home Concert Xtreme for Mac, PC, or iPad and wish to use the
MIDI files with that version of the program, you can copy the MIDI files from these apps for that purpose.

The apps have accompaniment tracks that can be played by your Disklavier's tone generator. (Just be sure to turn off the 500 ms delay in the Disklavier!) The apps display the piano part on the iPad screen in music notation. Depending upon whether you select Learn, Jam, or Perform mode, the apps will wait for you to play the right note, follow your tempo and dynamics, turn your pages, and so forth.
