Fair enough.

It's worth mentioning publicly for those not familiar with it (which is probably nobody reading this except me, until recently) that DKVBrowser is an awesome piece of software that should ship with every DKV, though I doubt that'll happen any time soon. It does everything the bundled equipment/software/PRC does, but better.

Consider me contacted. ;-)

I do have a verbal agreement with Yamaha that I won't divulge any information that I discover by poking around, nor make any "features" which step around their intended protections.

They've never actually threatened me, nor have they provided any information what-so-ever...However, the US reps have been very supportive of my contributions, and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize the relationship that I've built with them.

On the topic at hand, though...I will say the following. Having access to the root password would not have made your life any easier. The actual filenames of the MIDI files are *not* what is displayed. Instead, the display name of each song is stored in a database which associates the file-on-disk with a title, as well as a bunch of other information (ie. description, copyright, relative volume, and all of the other "details" that you can set/view at a song level). So, what you really needed access to (before you used DKVBrowser) was the database on the piano...not the file system. As it turns out...the database is protected by a different password from the root password, and the piano also won't accept connections to the database until you've successfully passed the encrypted handshake that the remote/DKVBrowser has to go through... So, all in all, it isn't trivial by any means. That said, I'm glad DKVBrowser was able to solve your problem!

Kevin Goroway has figured this out, I think he sniffed it, but walks a careful line so Yamaha doesn't sue his butt off. The iPad/iPhone app has made access pretty simple, but Kevin's program is a LIFESAVER for organizing music. He's a great guy - you should contact him.

I've noticed this question has been asked in the past, but never answered because it seems people were able to do whatever they were wanting to without having to resort to logging in and messing around at the lowest level. Indeed, I hadn't really played with DKVBrowser until I ran into here in the archives, and it resolved what I was trying to do, which was rename a bunch of CDs whose titles and contents didn't import properly.

Nevertheless, I'm interested… I know my way around Unix environments and would like to poke around the file system. I get as far as a login prompt via telnet, but nothing obvious seems to work with respect to login/password.

Before I resort to nefarious means for hacking into my own piano (lol) does anyone know the root pw? Or would it have been set locally by an installer in town (and therefore they're all different?)

Many thanks,
