Success story

Todd asked that we share success stories of avoiding overpaying for a
Disklavier as a result of participating in this group.

After a couple of years of monitoring DUG, I had learned what model of
Disklavier I needed, and had privately received referrals to dealers from
some happy customers. Once, I accidentally posted a message about my
interest in buying a used piano from a particular dealer to the whole group
when I meant to send it to only one person. Although I was quite
embarrassed at the time, the positive side of the experience was that a
couple of other dug subscribers responded with names of good dealers close
to my home.

I knew the list price of the model I wanted and I knew what my local dealer
was charging. Although I had a sense that that price was too high, I did
not know what was reasonable. What's more, the dealer never seemed to take
me seriously. This group was founded at a point when I had already wanted to
purchase for some time, but did not feel that I was in a position to
negotiate intelligently. It was my good fortune that several users had
posted relevant pricing information. With this information, I went to one
of the dealers recommended by another DUG subscriber and was able to
negotiate a reasonable price for a new piano. I've had it for about a year
and a half and it works like a dream.

The details of the sale are posted in the "What I paid for my Disklavier"
area, and I hope they will be of use to others.
