John,

Thank you for the kind remarks. This entire project was a joint effort by myself and my wife, Nancy. Nancy wrote the majority of the report. Without the significant help of Bill Brandom the entire project would never have succeeded. I hope that the report will be of help to others who are interested in replacing the HD on their Mark IV with an SSD. The advantages of doing so are obvious. there is much less likelihood of an SSD failing than of a HD, one can purchase high capacity SSD’s today for quite rinsable prices, the bouts of The Mark IV is much much faster, Song Search runs much faster than previously, and of course the piano is completely quite during all operations where disk noise cold be previously heard.

> I have a Mark IV disklavier that is almost 11 years old and which still has the original internal HD. Although this HD is still functioning without any problems, I decided that now was the time to replace the internal HD with an SSD. I wanted to ensure the safety of the nearly 2300 recordings that I had made to the internal HD, and I wanted to increase the available space beyond the space permitted by the 80 GB Yamaha HD. Several of the members of this forum have given indications of how they have managed to replace the Yamaha HD with an SSD, and I found these helpful. Bill Brandom, a Yamaha consultant and frequent invaluable contributor to this forum, also provide me with technical advice and assistance throughout this project. The instructions in the attachment below are designed to provide detailed instructions for the removal of the internal Yamaha 80 GB HD and its replacement with a larger size SSD. I have tried to make the instructions as clear as possible, especially the section on cloning the internal HD and enlarging the proper partitions which need to be enlarged to take advantage of using an SSD larger than 80 GB. I hope that these instructions are useful to those who may be considering this process. As the Mark IV ages, it would seem that failure of the HD will become an increasingly likely possibility, and I would urge owners of the Mark IV to have a fresh up-to-date backup of their internal HD whether they choose to replace it or not.
