I'm new to this forum so I apologize if my question has been answered. When I start my Apple IOS Disklavier Mark IV App. I get a message something like: App out of date, may not run on future releases, tell your provider. I have the latest release from the App Store. V 1.2.2 Does anyone know what Yamaha is doing about this? Jan

Good morning, everyone. Jan, I have no idea about Yamaha’s app development, but as an iOS developer, I can tell you a little bit about what Apple is doing. A couple of years ago, Apple made it clear to developers that they were moving away from 32-bit apps in favor of a 64-bit platform, and the company stopped accepting developer submission of 32-bit apps to the iTunes Store. There was a certain amount of both logic and inconvenience to this situation. Some months ago, the iOS operating system for iOS 10 started putting up an obnoxious message when you launched a 32-bit app, saying that it “might” slow down the device. Apple made no claim that any particular app actually did slow down the device. It appeared to me as though Apple was trying to shame developers publicly into updating their apps. Regrettably, Apple provides not way for a developer to sell upgrades, and this message put a lot of pressure on developers to spend their resources giving away free updates. More recently, the message has changed to the message that you have cited. Indeed, Apple could turn off support for 32-bit apps in a future version of the operating system. Additionally, from time-to-time, Apple deprecates certain system calls and apps that use those system calls have to be updated. I don’t know if the Mark IV app is 32-bit nor whether it uses system calls that have become deprecated for future operating systems. All I can tell you is that this sort of dance between Apple and the developers goes on and developers eventually have to fall in line with Apple’s rules and regulations. Regards, PianoBench

Hello Disklavier world: Purchased a Yamaha blue tooth midi loop and set up my computer to connect with a demo version of Sonar only software that I have found that has Bluetooth support. The computer connect fine, the playback was “a mess”. Lag, timing voices were all askew. I have a wagon grand with a DSR1 attached that works flawlessly with the wire Midisport Uno. I will effort a solution as it would be great if I could free myself from the wire or possibly move to IPhone control. Suggestions and ideas welcome. DanO

(4) Press the Play button in your sequencer in order to send the XG Reset message and the various patch and volume level messages for the other voices. Let your setup measure play one full measure and then press Stop. (5) At this point, you should be ready to play the notes on the piano. When you do, your note-on messages will be transmitted to your sequencer and will then be looped back to the Disklavier’s XG tone generator. If that will work, it would be good enough for what I'm trying to do, I'll try to figure that out. I do know how to assign the various channels 1,2,3,4...16, but not sure how to change voicing part: "beat 2, set up patch changes" That's what I need to figure out still. --Laurence

Good afternoon, everyone. I have used the MD-BT01 from Yamaha and the m.1 from Quicco Sound extensively in my studio as well as on the road when doing demos at conferences. I have used these devices with a variety of keyboards, MIDI interfaces, Macs, and iOS devices. Windows support (Windows 10 only, I believe) is relatively new and I have no comment on that. I have generally had good success when using an iOS device in close proximity to the BT adapter. I have not done scientific testing with these devices, but based on my experiences I have intuitively concluded that the following can be troublesome: —distances of 10 or more feet —MIDI files that have SysEx messages within the file (as opposed to a single reset message at the very beginning of the file) —MIDI files that have other setup information on measure 1, beat 1 where there is also a SysEx message I believe that SysEx messages are troublesome in this context and need extra time in order to be transmitted, received, and acted upon. I create a lot of play-along files with General MIDI accompaniment tracks. I have learned to put a GM resent message on measure 1, beat 1, position other setup messages on measure 1, beat 2 or later, and start the actual music in m. 2. I have also encountered situations in which BT MIDI seems to be working just fine and then all of a sudden becomes jittery. Usually the best practice is to do one of the following (1) stop the BT connection and reconnect or (2) power-cycle the BT adapter. Those actions usually clear things up. A couple of additional matters of note: (1) BT MIDI devices are not paired with your mobile device at the system level. It requires an application to set up a BT MIDI connection. If you power-cycle your mobile device or BT adapter, the connection is lost and must be re-established manually. This behavior is contrary to what we normally experience with BT mice, computer keyboards, and BT speakers which reconnect automatically when powered on. (2) If you are playing a MIDI file on the Disklavier from an external source and there is a track for the piano itself to play, you need to make sure that the Disklavier’s 500 ms delay is turned on. Alternatively, if you are only using the Disklavier’s tone generator for playback, you can turn off the delay. Regards, PianoBench

Good evening, everyone. Dan, on the Mac, you use Apple’s Audio MIDI Setup program to establish a computer-to-Bluetooth MIDI device connection. This application is found in Applications : Utilities. Once that connection is established using this app, any CoreMIDI-compatible app (which is, essentially, all modern Mac MIDI apps) will see that BT MIDI connection as just another device. This is easy to understand if you can appreciate the fact that Mac MIDI apps don’t talk to the external hardware directly. Instead, they talk to the operating system which, in turn, manages external devices. Regards, PianoBench
