Disklavier's new "Smart" PianoSoft feature

Disklavier's new "Smart" PianoSoft feature

2002-10-19 by drrltaylor

I thought the membership might be interested in reading about my
experiences with the recently-released "upgrade" for the Mark III
Disklaviers. This is a text copy of an email I sent to Mark Wisner
at Yamaha:

Hi Mark!

I thought you might be interested in the first impressions of an
early "end-user" of Disklavier's new "smart"
feature. I just
received the software update and have purchased about a ½ dozen
pairs
of Yamaha's new "SPS" diskettes and accompanying CDs.

(1) Using the disk supplied from Yamaha, the flash update
completed without a hitch. Hopefully, this update won't mess up
any
of the other Disklavier features, including the ability to
automatically sense and play SMFs, Pianomation/QRS CDs, and PianoDisc
CDs. So far… so good, but I have not yet been able to test
everything

(2) Although the new PianoSmart manual Yamaha sent me is a little
confusing (and it reads like someone in Japan translated from
Japanese, rather than starting with good idiomatic English), the
feature is VERY easy/simple to use (probably "idiot-proof")
and works
exactly as advertised

(3) I haven't yet tried recording my own piano accompaniment
to
some other commercial CDs (my piano abilities aren't nearly good
enough – I'll have to wait for our son, who is talented
enough, to
come home from law school to try that feature)

(4) I wondered how Yamaha was going to deal with the potential
problem that the piano might be tuned a little sharp or flat off
perfect pitch and thus not match the CD music of each pre-recorded
CD. As usual, however, I see that they already thought of that.
Although it's not documented in the new manual, I discovered that
the
Disklavier's built-in digital signal processor is smart enough to
allow one actually manually to "tune" the pitch of the
playing CD up
or down to match the piano!! This undocumented feature really does
work! QUITE IMPRESSIVE, if I must say so myself!

(5) When reading about the new PianoSmart feature several months
ago, I questioned whether it would really add all that much to the
piano. Having sample-played most of the new special music software
purchases, however, I have to say that I was wrong. We LOVE this,
and this feature adds significant value to the piano and enjoyment to
the music. Listening to these CDs with the (additional) live piano
does really make a difference compared to playing just the CDs alone,
which now sound a little "sterile". Now…..all Yamaha has
to do is
figure out a way to teach the Disklavier's DSP to "digitally
remove"
any piano from an existing pre-recorded analog music CD and convert
that to midi, so the Disklavier will automatically play along with
any pre-recorded music CD that might already have a piano. Now THAT
would REALLY be impressive! When is that coming?!?

Hope this finds you well, Mark. Thanks again for all your past help.

Folks,

I am totally confused as to what is happening on the Smart Piano
firmware upgrade. I notice a press release in the "What's New" Yamaha
Newsletter that states that Smart Piano software and (apparently the
firmware required to play it) has been released. However, there is no
reference in the press release as to where to obtain the firmware. I
have been watching the Yamaha disklavier support page diligently for any
new release of firmware, but the latest release is March 12, 2002 and is
clearly not the firmware needed for playing Smart Piano disks. To
further add to the confusion, I notice that both Hal Leonard and
Yamaha's own MusicSoft web sites are showing numerous Smart Piano
software disks which I assume are really available for purchase.
Finally, I note (as per the e-mail below) that some individuals
apparently have been able to obtain a beta version of the firmware -- or
is this the official public release of the firmware required to play
Piano Smart disks?

I have a Yamaha DC3A disklavier purchased about one year ago. With the
firmware upgrade, I would be happy to purchase and try out the Smart
Piano software. Can anyone clear up my confusion by answering the
following questions: (1) Where can one go to obtain the firmware upgrade
to play Smart Piano disks? (2) Is this an official Yamaha released
version of the firmware or simply a beta test version of the firmware?
(3) If the firmware is only available as a beta test version, when does
Yamaha plan to release the official version of the firmware and will it
be posted in the usual place at
http://www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/group005/fgrop005.htm? (4) When you
purchase a Smart Piano disk, does it tell you exactly (i.e. by Universal
Product Code No. or some other exact identifier) what CD it is attended
to be used with?

Tom,

The new update has been available and I received it from Bill Brandon at
Yamaha. The Smart disks are available from any music/keyboard shop that
orders from Hal Leonard.

I am attaching the file updates to this message. Unzip the file to a
disk for updating your Mark III ONLY! This software is not intended for
Mark II owners as far as I know.

Re: Disklavier's new "Smart" PianoSoft feature

2002-10-20 by drrltaylor

I obtained my software via email from Mr. Brandon at Yamaha. I found
a link somewhere on Yamaha's site for a link to request the flash
update, and Mr. Brandon responded with an attachment. Unfortunately,
I don't remember where I found that link specifically. If you have
any trouble getting the flash update, post another message, and I can
email a copy to you privately.

In terms of the matching of the diskettes with the CDs, the pre-
recorded diskettes from Yamaha are clearly marked (with title,
publisher, and catalog #) of the "matching" CD. Also, if you try to
play a diskette with the wrong CD, the Disklavier is smart enough to
refuse and tells you that there is a mismatch between the disk and CD.

There is also a new printed manual about the "Smart" feature. In the
email from Mr. Brandon, there was an offer to request this by email,
which I did do. Within a couple days, I had my copy of this by snail
mail. The maual looks like it might be an initial "draft" since the
language is not very "polished." See my earlier post about
impressions about the manual (not the greatest!), but the "Smart"
feature itself seems to work perfectly. The manual is really needed
so you know how to record your own piano accompaniments to your own
commercial CDs you have on hand. You can even save your "Smart"
accompaniments to memory disk. You really don't need this manual to
play the pre-recorded software from Yamaha, because that process is
obvious and idiot-proof (you just load both the diskette and the CD
at the same time and press play; the manual says always to put the CD
in first, but I found that that is not really necessary).

The flash update does NOT yet appear on the Disklavier software
update page. In an email Mark Wisner sent me, he indicated that the
powers that be at Yamaha have not yet made the decision to make this
update available to everybody. Apparently, they expect anyone who is
interested to request it individually. For those of you who might be
interested, the specific program versions that permit the new
features are: CTRL=4.44 and DSP=1.23.

Ron and Rick,

Thanks so much for the additional details on the Smart Piano firmware
upgrade. Ron thanks for posting the firmware update so that I can
download it. All of this seems a very strange way for Yamaha to
introduce this exciting new feature for the Mark III disklaviers. I
don't understand why this firmware upgrade would not be made available
in the same way that all previous firmware upgrades have been made
available on the Yamaha disklavier support web site. Nonetheless, thank
you both again.
