[disklavier] POLL: What is your opinion of this file swapping venture?

[disklavier] POLL: What is your opinion of this file swapping venture?

1999-12-03 by tmuncy@worldnet.att.net

I thought this group/club/frat was a good idea. I was thrilled by the overwhelming response I got in the 1st few days when we did it by e-mails without egroups. Now I find almost nobody contributing files to the vault and very little group conversation through our group e-mail address. My hope was that I was leading a band of DUG renegades that admit to liking music other than the Moonlight Sonata, not to mention a back channel from the Harry Fox copyright Gestapo. I'm trying to analyze what's not working. Let's see what this poll reveals. I will terminate it and release the results to the group in a week or so, provided there are enough votes to be meaningful. It's mostly in fun, but we all have to respond to enjoy the results. On a serious note, I'm desparate for someone to stage a palace coup lead/motivate this group. Check off your selections from the biased/slanted choices provided for your/our amusement. Then send an e-mail to disklavier@egroups.com and tell us what you really think. PS I have set this up as a secret (even from me) ballot poll, at the risk of #7 getting a lot of votes.

o I've contributed lots but haven't found much new stuff.
o Our vault contains all the good stuff out there already.
o Most people are holding back and are too lazy to edit and upload.
o I'm too shy to send e-mails to an anonymous group.
o Now that were out from under Yamaha's Dug Group rules, I forgot how to exercise free speech
o I can't stand that guy Todd, he seems like an arrogant #$%#^.
o Todd should be nominated for sainthood and I'm uploading some great stuff to the vault to reward his efforts

[disklavier] Re: POLL: What is your opinion of this file swapping venture?

1999-12-03 by Danny Simpson

Todd and group,

I don't have much to contribute to the group at this time. I will be contributing when I can get things to slow down here a little. I have been out of town most of the week on business and like most others, I will be busy during the Christmas season.

My musical interests are very broad including jazz, blues, pop, etc. Classical is my main interest at present for I am again taking piano lessons after almost 40 years away from it and my teacher is taking me in that direction currently.

I agree with both Todd and Mike McGregor in that before downloading to the vault, try to get the contributions in order if possible. That is to get the piano to play at a reasonable volume level and on the proper channels. It is time consuming editing either MIDI controller values or ESEQ format in many cases to get things at a 'reasonable' level. However, it is much easier to do it only once rather than everyone either doing it themselves or not enjoying the pieces due to varying differences between songs. By far, most of the songs that I have listened to (which has not been much of the total contributions yet by any means) have been great! We need to try to achieve both quality and then quantity. I cannot speak much myself for I have not had much free time available as of yet for adding to the vault.

Todd has opened this only a week ago and think that setting this up and all that has happened since has been tremendous in such a short time! (Maybe not sainthood Todd, but certainly congrats are in order!)

Todd - I guess you can count this as write-in comments for your survey. I recently got my Disklavier (March '99). It's an upright. I wanted a Grand piano, but I got what I got because it's all I can afford. Should have bought a new(er) car instead, but hey, the piano was a dream-come-true. I myself don't really play. At least anything to record and contribute to your non-classical share-group. Almost all of the disks I have are copyrighted Yamaha Musicsoft disks, and anything gleaned from the internet that I have, you already have posted from someone else. I love jazz trio music (piano, bass, drums), especially be-bop style (like Oscar Peterson). That's what sold me on the piano, in fact. I played jazz and concert trumpet in high school and college, and my dad was a professional trumpet player, so my love for jazz truly runs deep.

Todd, I have a wife, an ex-wife, and an eight-year-old son that lives two hours away that I go see twice a week without fail. Or I go get him and bring him back here (4 hours round trip). I also have a 50+ hour-per-week job that takes me nearly one hour each way to commute to/from. My (current and final) wife is now extremely pregnant and although she is wonderful and supports all of my personal hobbies/interests (music, sports, hme projects, and classic car restoration/maintenance), she likewise needs my support too (read: time). My point is that I haven't contributed because I barely have enough time to check my e-mail for 30 minutes three times a week, and maybe listen to the piano play for about 2-3 hours a week (usually as background while I'm doing something else), therefore, I really haven't had a chance to even downoad one song from your site, let alone upload something to it, as if I had anything. Look, if you don't want me in your users' group, let me know and I'll
unsubscribe. But I am planning to download at least a few things in the next couple of weeks, at least to have something for Christmas (besides my beloved "Selections from a Charlie Brown Christmas"). And if I do come across anything that I can contribute, please believe me - I will send it in! Honest. As far as your idea, I think it's fabulous and I thank you for taking the time and having the initiative to make it a reality.

Whoops, that about kills tonight's e-mail time allotment. Sorry I didn't weigh in sooner. Sorry to whine so much, but I'll bet there are many in the same boat as I. Anyway, just let me know if you'd like me to unsubscribe. Just please stop unloading the guilt trips on me for not contributing yet, OK? Meanwhile I appreciate what you've done and intend to use and enjoy the resource you've created as soon as I get half a freakin' chance! Thanks again!

Regards,
Eric Schindelbeck
