Anything new on the upgrade that was to be released in June?
2003-09-11 by Carol Beigel
The PianoSmart Upgrade kits are now available from Yamaha - for free! PianoSmart allows your Disklavier to play the piano along with audio CDs. If your Disklavier is a Mark III with a CD player built-in, then PianoSmart is a simple software update. Everyone else will need to acquire a Yamaha DCD1 CD Player to use PianoSmart. DKV owners who currently cannot play standard MIDI files on 1.44 MB floppy disks from their control units will also need to purchase the DSR1 Control Unit. DKVs with the MarkIIXG systems that do not have the EMK1 or Smart Key functions, will also need a new control board. If you already have the necessary hardware, the PianoSmart DCD1+PS upgrade kit comes with an extra MIDI cable, update disks for both the Control Unit and the CD Player, and an Owner's Manual. There is also a free PianoSmart manual available from Yamaha. You can order these from your local Yamaha piano dealer, or from Yamaha Service at 1-800-854-1569. I strongly recommend you acquire the official kit. However, if you can't wait until it arrives, and you can scrounge an extra MIDI cable, I have put the software and instructions on my website at www.carolrpt.com/pianosmart.htm What you will find there is how I explained the process to myself. I have also included excerpts from the official documentation to give more details. This upgrade is an incredible piece of work, and in my opinion, shows Yamaha's commitment to their Disklavier customers. Although the DCD1+PS upgrade will allow your Disklavier to use PianoSmart, it has some limitations not found in the MarkIII systems with built-in CD players. The most obvious limitation is that the audio pitch correction found on the MarkIII systems is NOT possible with the DCD1+PS upgrade. Since many of the CDs on the market are not recorded at A440, their corresponding Smart PianoSoft disks are not going to sound good on an upgraded system. Yamaha has posted a list of over 100 titles that DO sound good, with more coming. I have posted this list. However, all the PianoSoft Plus Audio CDs that Yamaha has produced, DO work on the DCD1 CD Player. Many thanks to the Yamaha technical support team for coming up with this upgrade, and helping me to learn about it. Carol,
I have a MX100A with a DSR 1 and a DCD 1 connected to it. Am I correct
in understanding that with the above configuration I only need the DCD 1
PIANOSMART UPDATE (software for the DSR 1 and the DCD 1) and MIDI CABLE?
I got confused when you talked about a new control board. With my above
configuration I understand that I would NOT need a new control board because I
have a DSR 1. Is that CORRECT? Thanks for the help.

The first posts of this message must of gone into oblivion, so my appologies if they show up later! I have been trying for 2 days to get this message out. I think maybe I checked too many boxes when I redid my settings, so this is a try from a different server. The PianoSmart upgrade kit is now available from your local Yamaha piano dealer or Customer Service at 1-800-854-1569. The software and the manual part number is #DCD1PS and the MIDI cable is #TXMIDI. There is also a PianoSmart Operations Manual for MarkIII owners part number PSMARTMAN. PianoSmart is the ability to have your piano play along with an audio CD. For MarkIII owners with built-in CD players, only a simple software update is needed to version 4.45. Any Disklavier not already equipped with the Yamaha CD Player will need the DCD1+PS CD player to use PianoSmart. If you already have a DCD1, then you need the upgrade kit with the software to update both your Disklavier Control Unit and the DCD1 CD player, and the extra MIDI cable. You must have the ability to play standard MIDI files from 1.44 MB floppy disks, so Disklaviers older than the MarkIIXG systems will also need the DSR1 Control Unit. MarkIIXG systems that have not already been upgraded to EMK1 kits or SmartKey will also need a new control board. This PianoSmart upgrade is a fine piece of work and shows Yamaha\ufffds commitment to supporting the Disklavier with updates and upgrades so that most features are available without replacing the entire unit. There are some limitations that the PianoSmart DCD1 upgrade has that runnning PianoSmart on a MarkIII does not. The most obvious is the choice of titles from the Smart PianoSoft floppy catalog. Many audio CDs were not recorded at A440, so even though their companion Smart PianoSoft floppies will work, the audio coming through the CDs will not match the pitch of the piano if it is in tune. The MarkIII can adjust the pitch of an audio CD to A440, but the DCD1 cannot. Therefore, Yamaha has published a list of CDs with companion Smart PianoSoft floppies that were recorded close to A440 and they are constantly adding titles. However, ALL of the PianoSoft Plus Audio CDs that Yamaha produces are recorded at A440 and that entire library is playable with the DCD1. For those of you who cannot wait until your kits arrive, and can scrounge an extra MIDI cable, I have posted the instructions and the PianoSmart software on my website at www.carolrpt.com/pianosmart.htm . These instructions are how I explained the system to myself. I have also included excerpts from the Yamaha documentation as well as the list of DCD1+PS Compatible PianoSmart titles. Many thanks to the Yamaha technical support team for providing this update, and helping me learn about it! Carol Beigel carol@...

I have a Disklavier MPX1 (Mark IIXG) and want to know if it has the EMK1 or Smartkey functionality installed? How can I tell? Also, how do I upgrade to the EMK1 if I don¹t? Then am I right in thinking that all I need then is DCD1 +PS and midi cable? How much are these like to cost. Many thanks Gary

You are correct in that you only need a MIDI cable and the software. Anyone with a DSR1 or a "W" in their control unit serial number does NOT need a new control board.
