Rachmaninoff PCs

Rachmaninoff PCs

2003-12-26 by Peter Phillips

Hi
I have tried all three Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos from
http://www.sciortino.net/music/svr.html, and can certainly report some
problems.

PC 1: Recorded as a two piano arrangement, I set my system so piano 1 was
the DKV, piano 2 from the XG sound generator. First issue is timing, as the
XG is 500ms ahead of the piano. Fixed that, but then found the file kept
playing after the piece had ended. This did not occur on Cakewalk, only the
floppy disk in the DKV control box (a DSR1). The main problem however is
volume. I used Veloset to tame the dynamic range, which meant increasing
the soft levels and decreasing the high levels. Similar issues with
movement 2. Could not get anything out of movement 3, with Cakewalk
reporting a file length of over 9 hours!

PC 2: Could not open the file.

PC 3: Was able to open two movements in Cakewalk, which showed a full
electronic accompaniment, but with only some of the tracks given a voice
(patch). Mov 1 showed a playing time of over 2 hours, Mov 2 some 4 hours,
and Mov 3 would not open. I gave up.

So, all I got out of it was the first two movements of PC 1, and then with
many issues that make it very difficult to get an acceptable result. Still,
as this cost me nothing except time, I suppose I can't complain...
