Wanted Information On Selling

2004-07-21 by Stacy

Sadly we are going to have to sell our Disklavier and downgrade to a
cheaper piano. I was hoping if I could get information on selling it.
Should we go through a local store, or just place an ad somewhere? How
do we go about finding a fair value?

Thanks for any help
Stacy

Stacy,

Of course, no one knows the fair market value of anything until a seller
and a buyer agree to a price. Until then, perceived values are fiction.

My attitude in this world is to hire someone (like a dealer) to do only
what I'm incapable of. I believe you are capable of this. Think about
it: Who has more incentive to negotiate the best price, you or a dealer?
If there is some God-awful urgency for a quick sale, set a price that
can't be refused.

For starters, I would have an RPT look at it and write up a report of
its condition and an appraisal. If you like what he says, use that for
bait. After he has signed the appraisal report (and only after), offer
her/him a finder's fee for locating a buyer. Call the other piano techs
in your area to ask for leads on possible buyers and send them your
flier. Go ahead and talk to dealers about a possible consignment, but
don't resign yourself to this route.

Don't overlook the possibility of an e-Bay sale. Invest in the book
"e-Bay for Dummies". If it all looks overwhelming, consider hiring
someone for a fee to do the dog work of listing it for you. I'm talking
about a bright high schooler who has previously sold trading cards on e-Bay.

Finally, when you have a price in mind, post a note to this Yahoo group
with some details: model, serial number, condition, location, etc.

Good luck! I'll be watching for your post.
