Possible future enhancements/wishes for upcoming disklavier products

Possible future enhancements/wishes for upcoming disklavier products

2006-02-25 by Claude Renaud

Hi,

Currently, I'm a user of a Yamaha DU1A upright Piano.
As I already explained on the two dedicated DKV lists I'm blind and
have great difficulties inorder to play fully with my DKV, because :
1. All information are written on the screen unit which is no
accessible for visual impaired persons,
2. So, I'm obliged to have a sighted person beside me to do what I'm
wanting to do on my DKV but the problem is most of the persons who
leave with me don't speak english at all, but unfortunately The DKV
interface is uniquely available in english.

So what I would like to see in a future upcoming version of the dkv
system is :

1. A multilingual interface for those who don't speak neither english
nor japanese;
And a way to access the dkv functionalities remotely (through a wifi
connection and a web browser for example as if the piano were a router
...), it would solve the lack of accessibility which prevent us from
deeply playing with our DKV product.
I must add, that if those enhancements were available a day, I will
not hesitate to sell my upright DU1A for a grand DKV equipped with
those nice features ...

Are those enhancements/wishes reasonnable or am I simply dreaming
because they are simply impossible ?

Greetings,

To follow up on this thread, what exactly is it that you (Claude) need to do with the Disklavier? As CCW suggested, it may be possible to do it all with external applications of write custom applications for specific needs. It might be possible to write some very simple apps that would integrate well with a screen reader but it is necessary to know what jobs need to be done.

The current Mark IV uses a proprietary version of Linux. What may be available in the future models is in the hands of Yamaha engineers in Japan. I would like to point out however that most vintages (not just Mark IV) of Disklavier can be controlled by a computer. The computer can be Windows, Macintosh, or some other operating system, as long as it can serve as a standard MIDI interface.

For example, you can have a computer running the French version of Windows hooked up to the Disklavier (using serial or USB port on the computer, and "TO HOST" or MIDI port on the Disklavier). With the wealth of nifty utilities available on this site and on Carol's site, you can do most everything from the computer (the Disklavier control unit just needs to be powered on). If you are interested in controlling it remotely, what I do is to have Windows XP Pro installed on the computer physically hooked up to the Disklavier, and then any other computer on my network (wireless or wired) can control that computer to control the Disklavier via Remote Desktop. I am not familiar with how well screen reader softwares can intergrate with Remote Desktop, but it may be worth checking into.

Quite simply, I would like to accomplish things you can regularly do
with your unit.
I'm équipped with a laptop running on windows xp and a screen reader,
and for example, I would like to be able to :

- play music on my piano controlling it from my laptop,
- make tempo variation,
- play left/right hands seperately,
- record and play my own performances,
- and so on ...

IS it possible from a laptop to do such things ?
If yes, what material do I need to accomplish this ?
Knowing that I have a DKV DU1A if I would like to _emulate_ Mark IV
functionalities, what should I have to buy and do ?
