Volume control on the Mark III

Volume control on the Mark III

2006-07-20 by genekennon

The answer to this may have been posted at some earlier date, but here
goes. How do I, or can I, lower the volume when in acoustic mode? I
have it at the lowest setting and it's still too loud in the new house
with marble floors. Does this have to be done with midi instructions?

Regards,
Gene

There is a limit, usually one that is too loud for some
situations, on how quietly you can set a Disklavier to
play a piano with the volume coming from the strings.
After all, it is not a stereo, but a mechanical
acoustic instrument! However, there are things you can
do.

1. For marble floors, I suggest a set of baffles made
from sound absorbing foam. Use two layers stuffed up
inside and out of sight, underneath the piano, and one
on top of the strings and keep the lid down. You can
make them yourself by making patterns of brown shipping
paper and cutting them out of foam from Markertek. Or
you can contact www.edwardsstringcovers.com and buy
them precut for your piano.

2. Have a piano technician come out and voice the
hammers, and globally set the "ppp" value as low as
possible. You can do this yourself in the Maintenance
Mode and individually set each of the 88 keys to play
as softly as you want.

3. You can edit the MIDI data on the songs that play
your piano. The default velocity on a lot of music is
100. I would suggest a dynamic range of 30 to 60, or
whatever sounds best for your room.

4. You can put a rug underneath the piano. Before you
go through all that trouble though, you can put a bunch
of pillows on the floor underneath the piano and see if
that helps first.

5. Put the piano in Silent Mode and turn up the volume
as required. The keys still move.

Each piano, room, and perception of quiet is different
from anyone else's. Each model of piano voices
differently. You just need to experiment with several
options until it suits you.
