Disklavier

Help please: 
I've got a type 0 standard midi file from another source that was
recorded using Acoustic Grand Piano voice on channel 1 (this was the
specified format).

I put it on floppy and tried playing it on the Disklavier.  It played
but only using the Tone Generator, i.e. the piano sound came through
the speakers, but did not play on the actual piano strings.

How do I get this to play on the strings?

The manual says "Mark II XG Series".  I don't have the actual model
number with me at the moment, it's the unit without the "record" feature.

(Which is why we're recording on a Roland digital piano and
transferring files via diskette)

Chadbot, I don't have this model, but I suspect that the directions  
would be the same as those for the full-featured Mark IIXG. Please  
try the following:

--Press Function. Move the cursor to MIDI Setup and press Enter.

--In the MIDI Setup area, move the cursor to PianoPart and press Enter.

--Look for a setting called Import File. If necessary, press the  
Right Arrow button to move to the next screen of this area.

If you are always going to use MIDI files with the piano part on  
channel one, set L=1 and R=##. If you think that you might use MIDI  
files in which the piano part is on other channels, set L=PRG(all)  
and R=##. If you think that you will sometimes have files in which  
the piano left- and right-hand parts are on separate tracks and you  
want to be able to cancel the playback of just one track, set L=PRG  
and R=PRG.

These defaults can be used to get you what you want most or all of  
the time.

My instructions above enable you to set the Disklavier's default  
setting for how to handle an Import File.

The simple explanation is this: When you record a song file using a  
Disklavier or Clavinova, a special, Yamaha-specific message is added  
to the file which tells Disklaviers and Clavinovas where to find the  
left- and right-hand piano tracks. Any file that lacks this message  
is considered to be an "Import File."

Hi George,

I had a chance to fix my problem today, thanks precisely to your comments
below.  It looks like someone else had been fiddling with the settings.  I
was able to fix it using your instructions.  Then I also did a "Factory
Reset" and the basic settings also provide what I need.
