Midi Files

Midi Files

2007-03-14 by Colin

I'm not sure if anyones interested, but I've amassed a collection of
4000+ midi files for solo piano over time.

Loads of standard 88 note non expression roll scans, but quite a few
ampico and duo art rolls too both classical and popular.

If anyones interested I can zip them up and put them in the files
section for all to enjoy.

I'd like that very much! The question is how big will the file be even after it's zipped?

Midi really doesn t take up much space even uncompressed. My guess is that his entire file would be less than one megabyte.

You'll never run out of music again

2007-03-16 by Colin

I hope you like music from the 10's, 20's and 30's because theres a
lot of it in this archive. Many of the files came from the hard work
of Terry Smythe in Canada.

99% of the files I've played, have worked perfectly on my c3 Wagon
grand. No, I have not played them all.

Be sure to play "Aggravatin Pappa", its a real swinger. "The birth
of the blues" makes my c3 absolutely sing. Theres also some
selections called "dinner music" that are fantastic. Let me know
what your favorites are, as like I said, I havent heard them all.

Theres like 4,426 Files in this archive. I dont think any of it is
copyrighted, and I think that the composers and the artists who
played this music would feel good that people like us are still
enjoying their music, even so long after their deaths.

I have it organized into self explanitory folders, expression, non
expression etc. I suggest using van bascos free karaoke player (not
just for karaoke) to play your piano. Its 55mb zipped, so the
download will take a few minutes, even if you do have hi speed
internet. Even if you dont, its worth the wait.

The files in the "expression" folders are roll scans from expression
capable pianos such as the Welte, Duo-Art, and the Ampico. These
songs capture every nuance of how the piece was played by the
original recording artist. Kinda neat to think about.

If you need help setting up the van basco player to work with your
usb midi adapter post here and I'll see if I can help, but its
actually very easy, and its way better than fiddling around with
720k diskettes all night long.

Heres the link to the Van Basco Software
http://www.vanbasco.com/download.html

And heres the link to the midi file archive:

In order to avoid bloating the groups bandwidth, I put the zip file
on my own server. I only have so much bandwidth, and since thats the
case I'll probably pull it down after a few days, so download it
soon.

If you enjoy them as much as I have send me a virtual beer!

Gordon I'm glad you're enjoying them!

If you get tired of fooling with the diskettes, go get a usb to midi
adapter and use the vanbasco software to play the files via midi. It
really works great and makes it much less of a chore.

=)

In most cases, there is an option if you are inclined to connect
a laptop to the MIDI-IN port of your DK. No floppy disk
handling ever again.

The most common method of making that connection is by the use
of a UNO Midisport adapter cable. It is USB on one end and
MIDI-IN / MIDI-OUT on the other end. In the middle is a little
oval shaped box with lights letting you know of data traffic
passing through. These are routinely available on eBay in
the $20 to $35 range.

vanBasco's Karaoke Player is what most people use to squirt the
midi files through the wire to your DK.

This is a very simple, effective solution for a virtually
endless supply of delightful music from an almost forgotten era
of our musical heritage.

Enjoy!

Regards,

Terry Smythe
