[disklavier] Managing all that mail efficiently

[disklavier] Managing all that mail efficiently

1999-12-06 by Todd Muncy

My experiment with the inbox assistant of Outlook Express was very enlightening and will be a big help in managing my e-mail. I will pass what I learned along, because you may all find it helpful. To access it, pick it off the "Tools" menu. Create different folders, other than the default "inbox" for various types of incoming mail, and then program the assistant to deposit them in the right folder based on specified criteria. For example: Set up the following folders:
Personal Mail
Swap Group
DUG group
Spam & other
Then add the following to the criteria in the Assistant:
1. If To: field equals your e-mail address then move to Personal Folder
2. If To: field equals disklavier@egroups.com then move to Swap Group Folder
3. If To: field equals dug@... then mover to DUG Group Folder
4. Direct all mail to Spam folder.
Number 4 MUST be the last one on the list. The first match, in order, that is encountered redirects the retrieved mail to the appropriate folder. If nothing matches (not possible with #4 present), mail will go to the default inbox. If you have multiple accounts or belong to other groups, add the appropriate folders and additional test criteria, prior to the Direct All to Spam test, which must com last. Personally I monitor about 5 different e-mail accounts and belong to several mail recipients group. Now whenever I push the "Send & Receive" Button, 12 or so pieces of mail are automatically deposited in one of 8 or 9 labeled inboxes. It's great!
If you get a lot of mail from your friend Bill C., you could enter a From: field test for DickHead@... and put it in the Spam folder automatically.
