Yamaha Introduces Disklavier Mark III Upgrade

Yamaha Introduces Disklavier Mark III Upgrade

2008-04-01 by sjhart110110

BUENA PARK, Calif. — April 1, 2008, Yamaha Corporation of America,
Piano Division, introduced the Disklavier Mark III control box
upgrade for its Mark III full-function series of performance
reproducing pianos. The upgrade offers current customers of the
world's most advanced pianos a host of innovative technological and
entertainment enhancements which are currently only available in the
newest Disklavier Mark IV models.

The Yamaha Disklavier Mark III Control Box Upgrade is aligned with
Yamaha's vision to let previous owners of their pianos utilize new
features.

The Hardware Upgrade will be available to Disklavier owners directly
through a Yamaha's authorized dealer network.

The upgrade involves complete removal of the Mark III control box.
The new control box has built in features very similar to the Mark
IV Disklaviers pianos. This includes a hard drive, Internet
connection, and other features. Complete details can be found at
Yamaha's web site www.yamaha.com. Additionally, the piano can be
controlled via a new wireless pocket device. A remote control
screen will become available at a future date.

The new Mark III control box introduces Disklavier Music Store. Like
the Clavinova's Internet Direct Connection feature, this capability
enables users to access the Internet directly from the Disklavier
Mark III's pocket or tablet remote controller screens without the
use of a computer. As with the Clavinova, an Internet connection can
be made wirelessly or through a cable. Users simply establish an
account over the secure server, and then may immediately download
the songs directly to their instrument. Users may even listen to a
song preview before purchase. An appropriate high-speed Internet
connection is required to use this feature.

Equally exciting is the new Disklavier Radio which offers a range of
streaming MIDI music stations for Disklavier owners to choose from,
including pop, jazz and classical formats. This subscription service
will stream PianoMusicSoft™ selections to Internet-connected
Disklavier Upgraded Mark IIIs & IVs worldwide, to play 24 hours a
day, seven days a week.

"The new Mark III control box enables us to continually improve our
customer's experience via a new hardware device," states Jim
Presley, Disklavier Marketing Manager. "Although we cannot upgrade
the physical piano hardware, by giving customers this control box
upgrade they can utilize many new features that are only available
today in the Mark IV series of Disklaviers", states Bill Brandom,
National Disklavier Marketing Manager. "We took Mark III customer's
feedback directly to Yamaha senior management and they responded by
putting a program in place which ultimately led to the creation of
the new Mark III control box".

The new Disklavier Mark III control box will be available in April
2008.

Sounds good. But I think it would take more than a box swap.

I've sat here for years looking at some (deleting most - sorry) of the
disklavier user group's email. I have a Mark II XG and have heard there once was
an upgrade add-on for this model to play CDs, the DCD 1. Apparently it is no
longer made and I can't find anywhere to purchase one. Any ideas?

Or more importantly, don't have space for (or want) a grand. Clearly
the limited profit on uprights isn't worth Yamaha's attention. A
shame, I'd love to have Disklavier Radio etc.

Ditto, I'd even upgrade from my IIXG upright to a IV upright if they
produced one, maybe they are reading this with interest?

If you can do all but the PDA interface, I would be thrilled!

Upgrade

What are the Mark IV features you would most like to see in an upgrade
kit for older Disklaviers? Would it be enough to have a device that
supports playing Yamaha (and competitors') CDs from a CD or MP3 player,
plus support for streaming music from a laptop or PC (including
Disklavier Radio)?

Or is the tablet/PDA interface absolutely essential?

My person opinion is that the expensive tablet and PDA hardware (though
cool today) will be hopelessly obsolete in just a few years, so an
upgrade based on adding so-called "analog MIDI" inputs would be the most
future-proof way to go. This would let you operate your Disklavier from
any current or future audio source, including MP3 players, wireless
links, central home audio systems, streaming from the Internet, etc.
Analog audio inputs on a Disklavier would work even 25 years from now
when USB and wireline MIDI are long-dead relics from the past.

But until you watch someone like my non-tech savvy wife attempt to interface
with a disklavier, do you realize that while "hopelessly obsolete" ( which
means very slow in speed and antiquated in its display abilities), just how
important having that touch screen is. I would not want to be without mine.
It's the PDA I could do without if it didn't have more of the technical
issues associated with it. I think that having two input devices is a bit
redundant and somewhat wasteful monetarily.

I would like the unit to be able to store all of my Piansoft files
(audio and non-audio, pianosmart/integrated with CDs), be able to
utilize disklavier radio, and have a PDA to control it all. SJ

RE: [disklavier] Re: Yamaha Introduces Disklavier Mark III Upgrade

2008-04-03 by Mark Fontana

Keep in mind this device would NOT have a network interface. It would
offer strictly an audio input (stereo RCA jacks) and an audio output
(another pair of RCA jacks to pass accompaniment to powered speakers),
plus a MIDI output to connect to the piano. There would be no remote
control, no screen, and no user interface.

You could feed the device from whatever audio source you like (MP3
player, laptop computer, wireless link, etc.)

Normal PianoSoft Plus Audio CDs could be played by either connecting a
CD player directly to the inputs, or by ripping them to WAV files and
playing them from a laptop or MP3 player.

Playing PianoSmart material would require pre-combining the CD and MIDI
files on the computer side with MID2PianoCD, then sending a stereo audio
stream to the piano.

MIDI files could be played by encoding them to the required audio signal
using MID2PianoCD.

All this conversion business would only need to be done ONCE. From that
point on, you'd simply be playing the resulting file on your MP3 player
or in iTunes etc.

Playing the Disklavier from an iPod seems about as wife-friendly as you
can get.

I should have known, too, seeing Jim Presley's name as the Disklavier Marketing manager.
He lost that position last year.

Re: Yamaha Introduces Disklavier Mark III Upgrade

2008-10-16 by sjhart110110

Still waiting for Yamaha to send out this announcement! :) I stopped
by my local Yamaha dealer and chatted with the sales folks who sold
me the Mark III that I own. They were more than happy to have me
trade in my Mark III for a Mark IV piano! Frankly, they told me they
were suprised that there was not an upgrade path as there always had
been in previous versions. Still waiting to somehow sign up for
Disklavier radio and send Yamaha my monthly subscription fee...

No more april fools jokes required now that the DK-850 is a reality. I should dig back through all of the threads were folks told me that this was technically impossible, etc. I'm going to pre-order ASAP. Thank you Yamaha for delivering on this!
