Power utilization of Mark IV

Power utilization of Mark IV

2008-06-16 by Kevin Goroway

I recently used a kill-a-watt to measure the power consumption of my DC3M4t. I thought others might be interested in what I observed.

While in standby: 43 Watts
While on, but not doing anything: 75 Watts
While playing a simple song (no pedal): 84 Watts
While playing some classical (lots of pedal): 160 Watts

Some things for comparison:
Halogen light I'm using to light the room: 288 Watts
Modern computer while in standby: 6 Watts

Lessons learned:
The piano is pretty conservative relative to lighting the same room!
The piano is terrible when in standby (but this might be because it can be woken via the wireless lan which therefore has to stay active) compared to a computer.
The piano is very much like a 40 watt light bulb burning all day long when left in standby.
Putting it in standby when not using it is a pretty substantial savings.
While in standby, my piano costs me a measly 17 cents per day, or about $65 a year.

Computers have different levels of sleep, and thus power savings. I have a 5 year old computer that uses about 45 watts in sleep, because the computer is
