Announcing the Re-announcement of DKVBrowser!

Announcing the Re-announcement of DKVBrowser!

2008-07-12 by Kevin Goroway

I am very happy to announce the re-announcement of DKVBrowser beta version 1.0. (for the Mark IV Disklavier version 2.10 and higher)

Over the past few months I have been in contact with Yamaha to discuss their newly added (in version 2.10 and up) security measures, and the fact that it broke DKVBrowser. I am convinced that the timing was coincidental. I was able to quickly circumvent that security but didn't want to release DKVBrowser with that code for a few reasons.

1) It was in clear violation of what Yamaha was attempting to do (protect the system from being accessed by 3rd party software).
2) By releasing it as open source it would document what they had done making the security measures, in effect, non-existent.
3) I didn't want to get sued.

My discussions with Yamaha have led me to believe that (in order of the above):

1) I was wrong about their intent. They were attempting to hide the clear-text that is transmitted when using the piano with the internet features.
2) I decided that I could take measures that would still hide what they are doing while preserving the open-source attitude of the project.
3) I won't get sued.

This is in no way sanctioned by Yamaha, and support will continue to come from me (and the others who have helped in the past, <Thanks!>). Thanks to Yamaha for allowing this project to live on!

Technical discussions on what I've done in answer to #2 will be carried out on the sourceforge forums dedicated to this project (if anyone cares).

A few points:
I've named it beta 1.0 to differentiate it from the alpha version which only supports pianos running version 2.0 or lower.
The initial release of beta 1.0 (probably tomorrow) does NOT support versions prior to 2.1 (those users are stuck with the last alpha release).
Beta 1.0 looks identical to the most recent alpha release since I haven't had any reason to pursue the project when it stopped being viable. If you have Disklavier version 3.0 (beta) already, DKVBrowser beta 1.0 can work on a computer that is directly connected to the piano (it no longer requires the wireless connection!).

-Kevin

PS. - Mark, relax, maybe the existence of this software will cause some users to upgrade to Mark IVs? ;-)

The upload is done.

Because it is a new "package", those of you who were "monitoring" the old DKVBrowser will not get notified of updates to this package. In order for that to happen, visit this page:

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=209840

and click on the little envelope with a plus sign next to the release you want to "monitor".

Please let me know of any success/failure over on the forums on sourceforge.

Thanks!
-Kevin

Hello Kevin,
I have waited until this very moment until your software supports 2.10, but I can't connect to my Disklavier.
I used the full command line to specify my IP. "DKVBrowser.jar pianoIP 192.168.0.67 pianoPort 3100"
But it errors. "unable to establish wireless connection to piano.."
I can telent to the piano (don't know the user/pass) and I can telnet using port 3191 (but ofcorse that gives me silly data).
I will use another computer that can connect to it via the wireless later on (but I guess that should work..)
Anyway, it suits me too use my Lan.
Cheers,
Philip
