It appears that I did not realize the midi cables had to go from IN to OUT and from OUT to IN, I had them matching IN and IN and OUT and OUT. As soon as I changed them around, it started working. Thanks for all your help. Now if another newbie has the same problem, you all know what to say :)

This is the reason that I suggested reversing the cables.

In the old days, most MIDI interfaces consisted of a box with MIDI  
ports on one side and a connector to the computer on the other side.  
You had to use separate MIDI cables to connect the box to the  
instrument.

Since MIDI data was intended to flow out of one device into the other,  
you always connected the MIDI cables from Out to In and In to Out.

In more recent years, the situation has become confused because many  
MIDI interfaces have MIDI cables permanently connected to the  
interface itself. These hardwired cables are typically labeled "MIDI  
In" and "MIDI Out." What is not clear is whether those labels are  
referring to the flow of the MIDI data or whether they are referring  
to the keyboard's ports to which they connect. I have seen them  
labelled both ways.

Bottom line: if it doesn't work one way, try it the other way.
