October 21, 2010 Hi, I am a new member of this group and have a Yahama grand with a Disklavier DKC100R model which I purchased about 12 years ago. I was told that the MDI IN & Out could be connected to a Lap Top and the music I record can be transcribed into Sheet Notation. Does anyone know what would be the best Lap Top and where can I obtain the software to accomplish this? Thanks, George H

Good luck. It is true that a laptop computer can be connected via a MIDI interface to the MIDI ports on a Disklavier. I have always recommended that Disklavier owners acquire an old laptop - older the better with a floppy drive. Even Windows 3.1 would work. The hardware consideration is what kind of port on the laptop will be used for the Disklavier. In the old days we used serial ports and serial MIDI interfaces. Today, we use USB ports with computers running Windows 98 or Windows XP and higher, so you would probably need the USB MIDI interface (cost about $35).. The notation software is a different story. Piano music transcription is a little cheaper because you only need 2 staves. Cost can go from free to $600 for a full version of Finale. I have spent years trying to figure this out. My best solution ultimately has been to use Logic Studio 9 on an iMac computer. Not cheap. However, PG music has a cheaper solution and it runs on a PC. Music notation is a world unto itself with many choices. I put more detailed information on my website several years ago at www.carolrpt.com Carol Beigel ----- Original Message -----
