Sorry about the spam

Sorry about the spam

2011-11-28 by toddsmuncy

As you probably noticed, a rare piece of spam recently reached our group. We have multiple layers of protection to prevent this, but in this case a long time trusted member apparently caught a virus or got his email password hacked. I have blocked further posts from his account until the problem is corrected. Be assured, we have been able to block dozens of spam attempts for each one that sneaks through.

Most spam attempts come from new members almost immediately after join just for that purpose. All new members are moderated by me and my moderators until they have made a few legitimate disklavier postings. Most of the remaining spam, sent by trusted members who are hacked, is caught by Yahoo's spam filters. In fact we must approve many legitimate messages that are mistakenly flagged by the spam filter.

If you joined in the last couple years and notice a consistent lag of more than 15 minutes between posting your message and seeing it, contact me to see if you are still being moderated, which we can quickly be removed.

The only way to raise the blocking rate from 99% to 100% would be to moderate all group messages, which would be a tremendous work load for the moderators and would greatly slow the exchanges among our 2,300 members. So please excuse the occasional piece that slips by.

Thanks,
Todd
