MD Slave Din Sync 808 303 MC-4

2005-01-10 by innerclock2004

Hi All,

Probably like many of you I love using live hardware synced up
properly for composing and performing. This is one of the reasons I
love my MD so much! I also own some much loved Din Sync devices - TB,
808, MC-202, MC-4 which need no introduction. I have a nice modular
synth setup as well and quite a few CV/Gate/Trig monosynths that run
beautifully running from the various Din Sync Trig outputs. I have
always used Clock to Din Sync convertors (Kenton/Reese etc) to run my
Din Sync rig as a slave to whatever is my master Midi Clock source
[MD, G4, MPC etc]. A long standing issue [10 years plus] for me is
the lag or lateness in the Din Sync rig after conversion from the
Midi Clock Sync. My midi rig running on it's own is tight enough for
me to live with after plenty of tweeking and my Din Sync/Trigger rig
is of course so tight it makes my eyes water! Put the two together
with a converter and even if I try and convince myself [and believe
me I've tried] it's just not on the money. The net result being I end
up recording the Din Sync/Trigger stuff as audio and re-syncing it in
my Mac or sampling 16 bar passes and re-triggering the samples as
midi in my MPC. Sort of OK for the studio but hopeless for a live
improvised performance and a 16 bar loop is never going to be the
same as a synced live analogue experience. So - while losing sleep
and sanity pondering this deilema over the last few years I designed
a box that fixes the problem and adds some truely mind bending Din
Sync options. It started out as something for me - to be honest I
never assumed anyone else would be interested - but since making it
and sharing it with a few close friends with Din Sync devices of
their own [who now refuse to use their own rigs without my little
box] I decided to make a few a share the experience. I'm getting a
website together but it may be a while away so if anyone is
interested - please feel free to email me. I'll send you back some
photos and how much and how it works etc..... Sorry this post is so
long winded but I thought it best to explain how I arrived at this
point and how it related to the Elektron Users Group in the first
place. All the best. David.
