I have an FMR 'really nice compressor' - I agree it definitely falls in 
the transparent category. Even so, I think it is good to have it inline 
all the time.. sort of 'getting the most out of' your MD or synth or 
whatever.

If you want a compressor that messes things up (and therefore a poor one 
as compressors go?) try the Alesis one that comes in the 6-pack that 
Novamusik is selling off. ModFX Smashup. It has some nice modes, esp 
'pump' and 'fat' that do nice things, even to a whole mix.

Kind of hard to demo it since they're discontinued though. :)
