After reading the press-release and reading the tm sysex spec in the manual
that definately does appear to be the situation.

this pdf from midi.org which looks to be about MIDI over firewire:
http://www.midi.org/about-midi/rp27v10spec(1394).pdf
gives the bit rate of the original physical spec in both kbps and 31,250bps
("operating at 31.25 kbps (31,250 bits per second), as defined in the
Complete MIDI 1.0 Detailed Specification.")
