I remembered hearing something about how terrible Logic is at MIDI sync. I dug this up on sonikmatter.com forums: -- This is a common bug (and it is MAJOR BUG) of Logic. It is happening in my logic also. Basically, Logic plays external midi devices faster than it should be. Also, the amount of the trouble increases as you increase your buffer size. I don't know why Logic's MIDI timing is effected by buffer size, but this problem really drove me crazy and I tried out so many thing. You can minimize your headache by using Preference>MIDI>Sync>All MIDI Output Delay. Give some delay. HOWEVER, you must always RE-ADJUST the amout of delay when you change the buffer size. -- ... also, this from the same forum thread: -- Numerous other users sync fine with Logic/external kit.....myself included.....for over 10 years. One area where there can be a problem is when slaving external MIDI devices (hard and software) to Logic. SOME devices have either a very small MIDI buffer (Roland devices are notorious for this).....or an internal sequencer/arpeggiatior that has limited resolution. The MIDI spec defines 24ppqn as all that is required for sync. Over time, manufacturers have changed/improved on this, with some hardware sequencers offering high resolution pulses, like Logic's 960ppqn. The big problem is that Logic transmits this ppqn resolution when sending time code.....and some MIDI devices simply can't deal with this amount of timing info......so their MIDI buffers fill up....and the device loses sync......or they misinterpret the additional timing info. It would be a nice option in Logic to include a pull-down menu for SENT sync code resolution - 24 ppqn, 48, 96, a.s.o. The solution for such devices is to SLAVE Logic to the external machine/app.....and record the arpeggiatior or sequencer info into Logic....then make Logic the master....and simply play back the data to the synth/drum machine in question. -- Pretty interesting to say the least (if you didn't stumble upon it already).
