I've always had trouble using a midi note to trigger patterns in sync. It's pretty obvious really. If the note is on the beat, when the sequencer sends the note, it's already late... I generally run Live as a master, tweak the midi clock timing for the MD port until it's as good as it gets, and then send ProgramChange to switch patterns.
