Software tools for the MD

I've just got my MD, and I have a long way to go exploring al its
possibilities.

However, being a programmer, I'm also toying with the idea of write some
tool for it ... an editor or librarian, I don't know.

What kind of software tool for the MD is needed the most, if there is need
at all ?
What kind of tools already exist ?
