Hi there,
I just listened to the Valve mp3, to check their MD sounds. I liked it very
much, but I absolutely don't agree when Elektron writes they push the MD to
its limits, as for me more most sounds are really MD classic...

Agree!
Why have I spent the last 2 months practising every day with my new
1200s ???
Mixing skills aren't a plus, they are basic.
Obviously, skills alone mean nothing.

On the other hand, everybody's got to learn. I remember a gig with my first
band. We existed 1 year, and just had about 15 songs so we could play for
about 60 minutes. We had only done one gig before. Then I got a phonecall
from a guy who wanted us to play live 3 days later at a big student party
where at least 500 people would come (which was huge, considering the fact
we had only played for about 50 people at the local football club!). We had
to replace an American funk act that couldn't make it (and we were playing
"new wave", couldn't sing, and had no experience whatsoever.
Well, what can I say. We rehearsed day and night for 3 days, did the gig -
and many things went wrong.
Although we got some applause, and strangely enough no one walked away
(probably because of the dj that got on stage right after us), we definitely
sucked big time. Somewhere I still have the tape, and I just don't dare to
listen to it. It was really embarrassing...

Looks like it was a great time. I was planning on flying over for it
(I'm in the US) but my sister's wedding was the same day. I'd be
willing to bet the Elektron party would have been more enjoyable :) As
much fun as it was listening to a bad DJ play tons of pop music,
listening to these MP3s I think I would have preferred Sweden.

Point well taken, but at least the most basic you
should learn at home!!! Although I have not heard your
first gig, someone who did liked you enough to book
you again, and I'm sure before that first gig you must
have practised many times (specially since you had 60
minutes woth of original material). It's not like you
showed up on stage and did'nt know how to play the
guitar. Plus you yourself mentioned you rehearsed day
and night!!!! That's all I ask for when I hear a DJ.
Not everybody can be Jeff Mills, but to play in front
of people you need a little more than balls and a
rudimentary idea of working the fader. You need to put
some effort on your craft, or THEN it's plain
embarrasing.

Perfect beatmatching skill doesn't make a DJ good.
In my opinion, perfect beatmatching skill is already *ASSUMED* if
one calls oneself a DJ. It's just a given. If a DJ can't beatmatch
he or she needs to lose the name DJ and go back to the bedroom and
practice for another year or two.
Once they have that down, what makes a DJ good is ability to play
the "correct" record that will both mix well with the previous record
and keep building up the music for the sake of moving the
crowd/listener. And that takes even more practice, and also the
ability to read an audience... which a lot of DJs will never get the
hang of.

Ok. I know that Erase can beatmix without problem. He chose not
to. Why? This is my guess.
Playing records from several genres, for non-dancing purposes. Music
for hanging around to, the first DJ slot for the evening. More
important to create a mood than get people up and dancing. A good
selection of music is much more important than perfect technical
skills.
I've played several gigs like that, music ranging from 20'ies jazz to
the latest electronica from Warp. Get people in a good mood, get them
prepared for what is to come later on in the night.
So, what makes a good DJ? People enjoying the music she/he plays. If
the DJ is playing to make people dance, obviously dancing people is a
good sign of a good DJ. The right DJ at the right place at the right
time.
A DJ can be playing like an angel, but if the audience doesn't like
the music, is that a good DJ? To me, no. Never. Ever. If the
club/occasion demands it, the best DJ in the world can be one that
only plays the latest country'n'western hits from the radio, as long
as the audience are enjoying it.

i think that the most important thing for a dj to do is engage the crowd.
there are plenty of big named dj's that can't beat match to save there
life's(though most can, for the most part), but i think in a "party
atmosphere" most people don't really care if the mixing sucks just as long
as
the" vibe's" there. now listening to something on a cd or mp3 is complete
different because your not in the atmosphere of the party, your just sitting
around in front of a computer(more than likely for these mp3's), where your
paying attention more to the music then the girls/beer/drugs/whatever.
also splank your live pa is great!!! i have listened to it about 5 times
now.

I agree completely. But do we know how much effort this guy put in his set??
Or maybe his girlfriend broke up with him, or he got a bad case of stage
fever... When you combine this with it being someone's first or second time,
things can go very wrong. OK, I wasn't there, but I've read quite a lot of
stories about (now famous) people who prepared themseves well for a first or
second gig, and then everything went wrong. One band even had to leave the
stage and change their name (forgot which band that was).
Oh, well, most important thing; it looked like a great party, and next time
I will try to come as well and combine that with a vacation in Sweden :))

if the mixing sucks the set sucks. More specificly If they are trying to
beatmatch and trainwreck all over the place. If they aren't really mixing
and not trying to beatmatch and just letting songs end etc.. the general
public will feel that thats passable i guess if your mixing tracks that
really cant go into each other.

Ok, first of all: I don't want to insult Erase or you.
And I admit I can only comment based on this ONE
performance. But, it seemed to me most of is set was
electro (danceable stuff too), all at around the same
speed. Not impossible to mix, but that's just me.
If he can beat mix and chose not to, that's his
mistake, specially when this is going around the world
for all to hear and is probably his only calling
cardto many people. What if I'm a promoter here in NY
looking to do an Elektron party and this set is the
ONLY thing I have of him? You think I'd pay him to fly
down here or would I pay instead for Zombie Nation's
kick ass set?

I think you need BOTH.

Anyone can put records one after the other and if the
tunes are right people will enjoy the music. It does
not mean she/he is a "DJ". At least not a
proffessional one.
Again!!!! Much respect. He might really be a super Dj,
and was playing without monitors, or 1000 other
reasons. I certainly do not want to offend anybody,
but gave an opinion on what I heard (and is something
that bothers me, BAD Djing).
