MD SPS-1 when pushed to EXTREMES

2003-04-21 by Simon

I'm considering (still !) buying the MD but i would like to hear
what MD owners have to say about one particular aspect: can the
MD be pushed to the extremes to create sounds that would suit
the darker-dirtier side of music (call it noise if you want). Cause i
plan to use the MD also for different purposes other than the
Electro-Techno, something close to: industrial, Trip-Hop
(Massive Attack / Tricky but dirtier), Noises-Gabba (think Atari
Teenage Riot).

I've been listening to every possible samples i could get my
hands on, and i heard a few examples that was in the league of
what i'm looking for. Frankly, it sounded very promising. From all
the review i read, my understanding is that the Distortion FX is
rather weak , but i was led to believe there is two stage where
you can apply Distortion (Clip?) and one is stronger than the
other (???). However, they also wrote that sounds can also be
seriously altered with the SampleBit Reducer (i love this FX on
the Korh ES-1, but the Distortion is a joke) and the Compressor.
One reviewer said the Compressor can distroy anything if you're
not careful, true ? Btw, can the compressor affect specific tracks
or is it used as a master only ?

I recently purchase a DSI Evolver and this is the kind of Extreme
i'm talking about. This thing can growl AND maintain a full
distorted sound, but less thin and treble-ish like you (i) usually
get from a digital synth thru a stomp box. Anyways, i realize the
MD is not a VA synth and is used for a different purpose but i
think it shows best what i'm going for.

Sorry for the long long question (s) guys, i just wanted to be as
precise as possible to get a clear response.

Thank you for any comments,

Simon
