My guess is you don't see how flexible the MD is.
When playing in song mode you only have to press Pattern/song key to 
switch to pattern mode and the pattern that was playing will loop.
You can also link patterns in pattern mode so you can make long 
loops.
Better of course is making patterns and record them realtime while 
tweaking and muting, really, this is the best way to go.
