sounds reasonable - so what would be wrong, then, with a user defineable
option to be warned when about to erase something?

I like how it works just fine. I'd forget to save all the time with
the MD... the roland drum machines (606,707,727,808,909, etc) all work
as the Machinedrum does, and my experience with touching the current
program directly would have me assuming my pattern is saved.

Another item, perhaps more important, is how much of a hassle this
would be for live use. I often make quick changes to the tail of a
pattern right before jumping to another, expecting the changes will be
there when I get back to the pattern. An extra couple button presses
to save would make it impossible to do alter patterns on the fly and
expect them to be as they were. Esp if you work at high bpm...
