I WISH that I could experience this - that would mean I have two MD's
to play with :-)

are you sending just clock from the other MD? i.e are they using the
same channel span or separate ones?  it may be that the master is
sending too much MIDI data over its channel span and the slave
is getting confused. check this and also make sure that the slave is
set to EXT (though I don't think it should matter much).
