Q&A + new demo

2001-03-02 by Daniel Hansson

Hi!

I've uploaded a new Machinedrum soundclip. This one is quite freaked, and
shows a new side of the MD-sound. All different synths are used.
You'll find it in md_demo. Full URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elektron-users/files/md_demo/md_germanica_192.mp3

I'll try to answer some of the questions put by people on the list the
past day:

1) No, Machinedrum is no Stomper. Has no similarities.

2) Yes, you can use MIDI-note-messages to trigger patterns. You can also
trigger individual drums over MIDI if you'd rather do that than press the
trigger-buttons.

3) Open ended? It is flash-upgradable, and we will supply upgrades. If we
get the inspiration we could add new machines or even synths. But users
can't write their own drums. This is much harder than you might think.

4) The bassdrum sound sounded like it shifted in sound on different
trigs? This is partly because of that some machines work that way - they
can differ between different times when they are trigged. But most of it
came from that the system wasn't really healthy at the time I recorded the
bdsd_example.

5) What effects (external) are used for the demos posted so far? None. The
Machinedrum is connected straight to a soundcard and recorded from it's
internal sequencer. OK - they have been normalised. :)

6) What effects does the MD have? First, it has a 16 track effect system.
One for each drum track. This has a 1-band EQ, resonant low/band/high-pass
filter, Dist, Sample rate reduction and Amplitude modulation. Each track
has sends to the Rhythm echo and Gate-reverb. The stereo master effect
system include EQ and Dynamic processor. The demos at the md-site almost
only use clean machines. The germanica-demo uses all kinds of (internal)
effects. The reverb is not yet ready and has not been used in the demos.

7) Synth-engine specs? I'm sorry - would take too long. I might come back
to this one... Samples are used in the E12 synth, but it hasn't been used
in the demos so far.

8) How many Machinedrums are planned? 100 will be produced in the first
batch. These will be offered to SID-customers and friends in the beginning
of April at an introduction-price. We will not be able to produce very
many at the beginning (they are really costly to produce) so there might
be a shortage.

9) No limited edition is planned. The Machinedrum will be limited by
itself for the time coming.

10) When can we see the manual? It's not ready yet. Most of our time goes
to developing at this moment. The MD is still in development.

11) Are you doing any new things? We've been very hard with the
Machinedrum and haven't had time for any other project.

Sounds Great Daniel! Much more varied than the first couple clips. I did
really like the pure synth-ey sounding stuff in the demo the other day.

Good luck to you guys.

Awwwww. what kind of DSP are you using? heh!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
