[monomachine] bug! ugly bug.

[monomachine] bug! ugly bug.

2005-05-24 by niall munnelly

{i've already sent this to elektron support, but thought i'd
ask here, too}

hi,

i've been working with the monomachine over the last few
days and have found a reproducible behaviour that shouldn't
be.

i have the sfx-6 and OS 1.05b {no high-pitched lockups,
yet!}.

i'm working on two different ideas right now, and, when i
was auditioning them for my partner, i found that the first
pattern would sound messed up when i returned to it.

the best way to describe it would be to show it:

http://syncretism.net/snd/monomachine_bug.mp3

in this file, the monomachine cycles from pattern d7 to d8,
then back to d7 again. note that d7's tuning is totally
different after switching back from d8. it will be most
apparent if you play the short mp3 on loop.

i'm not sure what's causing this behaviour, but it's really,
really bad! i have to change to other patterns and
sometiems reboot to get my correct settings back.

this isn't the first time i've come across this behaviour in
the mono, but it is the first time i've made a point of
recording it. is this a known issue?

Funny... I think I stumbled upon the same bug last night. I was playing some
fast arpeggios by hand on one machine, when its tuning went out. It stayed
out if tune for the one machine, even when I switched to other machines and
back. It was definitely off - all of the other 5 machines were fine.

thanks. i'd sent the two patterns+kits to elektron; maybe
that will be of some help to them.

I found the same exact bug two days ago.

In my case the thing that went out of tune was an FM Stat bass. I had
5 different sequences from E1 to E5. Whenever I went to E5 (FM Stat
in track 1), if I went back to E1 (FM Stat in track 1), track 1 on E1
was completely out of tune. I could get my sound more or less back
again by lowering the LPQ, but it seemed to me there was more
changes, as the sound wasnt exactly what it used to be. It only
affected track 1 on E1, all the others were fine.

The parameters on track 1 E1 when out of tune have the same values as
when in tune. I could not appreciate any change, though there could
be.

I tried making a different kit via COPY TRACK, but it still got out
of tune once I went to E5 and back to E1. I tried making a new kit
copying the parameters by hand, but it still went out of tune. I also
tried copying the pattern to E6, but it still went out of tune.

The only way for it to go back to normal was powering off the MnM.
The only solution I found after some messing was simply make a new
sound, with a different machine.

I'm not sure what triggered this bug, but it started happening after
I did two things: I changed one machine in E4 track 1 (SW saw to FM
Stat, I think) and saved the kit, and I did a new pattern in E5.
After that, its when the bug appeared. It may have nothing to do with
it though.

Its a very nasty bug. I tried to post it on the Elektron Users forum,
but it gave me an error and I didnt have the patience to write the
post again.

Hope the guys at Elektron solve this one, it sucks for playing live.

It would be very helpful if you could tell me what the error was, if
you can remember it. I'll do my best to take care of it. Feel free
to email me off-list.

Hi Scott. I tried posting without logging in, as I thought it was
possible to post as anonymous or Friend. It then went to a white screen
with the typical two line error text message on top, and then it went
to an Elektron Users page that told me an error had ocurred and my post
hadnt been posted.

Just tried to 'test post' again. This is the error:

Insert topic error:INSERT INTO xoops_bb_topics (topic_id, topic_title,
topic_poster, forum_id, topic_time, poster_name, approved) VALUES
(0, 'This is a test (no message inside)', 0, 1, 1116958025, '', 1)

It may be a stupid thing, dunno. Keep in mind I'm not logged in or
anything, so that may be the reason.

Hope it helped.
