coffin case advice

2005-06-17 by Michael

k, so I've decided it's time to get more "pro" with my elektron twins
and their portability -

I'm looking to get a hardshell case with some foam, to hold both a
tabletop monomachine and a machinedrum that I can sit flat and use as
a live coffin case as well as a means of transport.

any suggestions on economical solutions? I'm sure I've seen some
things like that posted here before, but I'd love a refresher, links
to specific products would be super ultra awesome!

I've seen one from elektron, but it's pretty damn expensive if you ask
me. Actually, I think it's more of a backpack kinda thing

Re: [elektron] coffin case advice

The Elektron soft carry case is worth every penny. There was
recently a discussion here about that.

Anyway, I think what Michael is looking for is something that will
carry both boxes side by side, and possibly a small mixer and power
strip. I haven't seen anything like this, but I'll keep my eyes open.

There was also a certain rifle case that people were using for the MnM
keyboard, best, case, design, ever.

That's definitely the family of case I'm looking at - but part of me
is almost thinking I can grab a "vintage" hardcase and get some foam
to cut to size for less than the $250....

If I can't find that option then I'll go the pelican route. then niall
and I will be even more twinlike in our gear list :D

Catalog #PC1650 MSRP $295.75

that's yer man, right there.

since it comes with foam, you can make it a perfect fit.
pelican cases are waterproof, coffeeproof, and probably
bombproof.

that's me! and yes it does! it works *wonderfully* at protecting
the MnM.
plus it has several handles and wheels on it; nice for going up/down
stairs
and into/out of venues.

also, I second the Pelican case idea. i have the 1500 case and it
will fit and
protect the MD (or SFX-60) very well.

i think that either the 1720 or the 1750 will work. the SFX-6 is
38 inches long and the 1720 is 42 internally. that should be enough
room for foam. but if you want more, the 1750 is 50" internally.
either way, both of them will work. they don't have pull-n-pluck foam,
but they do have multi-layer foam which can be cut around the SFX-6.

very nice - option is noted, I will weigh it against anything I might
see at ye ol' banjo center and the "swedish mafia rifle case".

Rui,
I posted a solution I found last summer for the MD and MnM
SFX6. It is attached here again. However, I'm not sure if TZCase has a
distributor in Europe but you may be able to find something similar.

For those of you looking for a case solution for both the MD and MnM
SFX6, here is a cheap alternative:

http://obliq.net/guestftp/elektron_case_open.jpg
http://obliq.net/guestftp/elektron_case_closed.jpg

The case is actually a shotgun/rifle case I found at my local sporting
goods store for only $60 USD made by this company:

http://www.tzcase.com (they are in the U.S.) The case model number is
TZSR-53SS. If you do a google search I'm sure you can find a company
that sells them online. It is made out of corrugated or ribbed silver
aluminum and comes with pluck foam and egg-crate foam to customize the
layout inside. All 4 latches lock with a key. As you can see from the
photo, it is a rather tight fit for the MD and MnM side-by-side but it
works with a little space to spare on either end for smaller foam
strips. To keep the two machines from rubbing on each other, I used a
thinner strip of rubber to buffer between the two. With the foam cut to
size it is a real nice snug fit in the case. There is also room to cut
out a place for the MD power supply (pictured) and the MnM power cable
(not pictured). I also made a small cut-out in the foam inside the lid
to accommodate the joystick better which seemed to work well. One other
modification I had to make was removing the side hinges, otherwise the
case wouldn't close without crushing the sides of the machines.
Removing them was of no consequence to the case, the lid still stays
propped open fine.

The case itself seems built pretty well and solid, but keep in mind it
is no Anvil case. I would probably not do any extensive travel with it,
but will serve as an excellent solution for bringing your Elektron gear
to a local gig or over to friends studio. It sure beats the cardboard
box it came in. Also, the case will serve as an excellent table top for
your gear when playing.

cheers,
nate

I just ordered that. it's the same line as the one nathan got, but it's got a taller dimension
as well as shorter (37") so it'll fit in theory an MD and MNM tabletop plus a small mixer ;)

I'll post pics/report once it gets here. It'll be interesting carrying it around in NYC. I figure
I'll load it up with stickers or spraypaint a bob dobbs stencil head on it....
