sample "clicking" in rom machines

sample "clicking" in rom machines

2006-08-13 by nitrada

hey there,

maybe somebody here can answer this question.

i'm experiencing strange behaviour with some of my oneshot samples
when used in the ROM machines (i'm currently using "rom-01" to
"rom-08"): mainly longer bassdrums with a bit more of sustain are
producing a "clicking" sound after playback; you can pretty much hear
the end of the sample with an ugly click sound.

i tried to get rid of it by using HOLD and DECAY. if i set HOLD to a
very low number and DECAY to something like 60, the click sound
disappears, but then the sound of my sample changes a lot, of course
i can't hear the room/sustain sound in the end anymore. same for
START and END: no matter where i set END, the click remains.

is this a general problem of these kind of samples with the rom
machines or am i doing something wrong? i also tried to transmit the
WAV files with loop on and off to compare, but there is no difference.

would be great to hear if i'm just too dumb or if some of you guys
are experiencing the same problem sometimes ...

thank you + best regards,
christophe

Yeah, I got this too. I'm pretty sure it's the result of a new "note"
cutting off the previous note's sample at a non-zero crossing point.
Not much you can do about it except play with all of the notes lengths
to make sure new notes don't cut off old ones.

Too bad there's no way to automatically apply a 4-5ms fade in and out
too all samples. At least fade out.

i have gotten that problem before with the use of too much compression
and the attack and release settings were incorrect. go back and see if
that is your problem. just a thought...

Howdy-ho,

not sure if this applies as I don't have the UW. I had similar issues
where hihats would slap back on me after a long decay. What would
happen was I would stop the playback and three seconds later a loud
click from one of the hihats was heard. I never bothered to resolved
the issue as I could edit it out in the recording afterward but it was
a bit of a buggerance.

My point being, this might not be related to the ROM-machines at all
but to the way sounds are played with long sustain in the MD.

Like to swap MDUW against normal MD.

and of cause compensation for the value difference.
maybe i am also interested in trading against a TR
909...

I live in Germany/Berlin...would be handy if intersted
people would be in germany aswell.
