IDM on MD

IDM on MD

2007-07-20 by pixfodase

Just made this video to show a couple of "tricks" on how to summon the
IDM/glitch monster that the MD is. It ended up being too big for
youtube though. I'll do another render with lower quality but for now
this one has 192kbps encoding. enjoy!

it doesn't! :)

really, I've been comparing the 2 and I sort of convinced myself that
in the end, there would be only one...but I haven't been very
successful with that because they're so different in every way.

Imo, the 999 is a better drum machine if what you're looking for are
electronic *drums*. The kick punches deeper, the snare cuts better and
the hats are way superior. Even playing samples.

On the other hand the MD is this idea generator that brings out new
and original stuff every time you mess with it. But with its own very
particulate sound. The 999 in that sense sounds a bit more generic.
You can load your own samples but you'll never be able to do that much
with them. Pitch and amp and that's basically it.

So I think that it depends on what you're after. If you want drums,
then the 999 delivers in spades. If you want a crazy synth/sampler
capable of surprising you every time you mess with it, then it's the MD.

cool. yea i was just curious. i compared my md to an xbase and a
909 a few years back and came up with similar conclusions.

in particular, the xbase sequencer is pretty much complete crap
compared to the md's. hopefully the 999's is a bit better. but
because of the lack of a decent sequencer, i always thought the
airbase would be the way to go, if only it were easier to program the
mother.

anyway, thanks for the comparison!

OMG

You're my new hero. This sounds awesome. I'm going to have to watch a
few times to pick it up, but I'm digging what's going on.

Re: IDM on MD

This is awesome...Ive been playing around with it a bit since I
watched the vid.

I do have a question - whats the best way to get rid of all the
parameter lock data? Should I go to the edit menu and remove the mid
machine? Sometimes the data seems to stay....but I might be doing
something wrong.

Thanks for the video.

I usually clear the track or delete the steps 1 by one and replace
them with new ones but the parameter values in the buffer remain even
if you delete the track. That's actually cool because I like to keep
building on the new patterns that come by. The only way to recall the
original settings is to load the kit again (but make sure you either
erase all locked steps in the CTR track or mute it when you reload the
kit).

There is a mean bug regarding midimachines that still
is not solved...
better dont use them

Man, that's absolutely stunning! Tanks for sharing this technique!

(I don't really record the parameter locks, but using the ctrl-al track
to modify patterns and reccord into live is just great! Much easier than
holding the function button while tweaking.)

what OS?
what bug?
it cant be that mean not to use midi.. i use midi machines every day
1.33 and the only bug i noticed was SRR type distortion on a track
after loading a sound machine that was a midi machine track.

other than that no meanies in my midi machines.

I have the last OS and a lot of bugs with midi machine and some random one.

that the meany i am talking about... once you used a
midimachine in a kit these korruptions can occur at a
much later point in a production...
so... you can use them...but you need to be very aware
of when you use them and where...

I hope there will be a new os that fixes that soon...
I often load old kits that was done before i started
to take care in a way that i only use midimachines on
track 15&16 to have potential corruption isolated...

but on older kits midi machines was used on any track
if desired...

It's fun to notice that sometimes, when my MD goes crazy because of that, she
make incredible-good-new-crazy sound :) I wish i could save them but it's not
possible (random bug create random sound). Sometimes it's really frustrating
because it's fantastic and i don't want to loose this but it's also magic, and
the feeling to live a unique fragment of time is great...

If i was rich i would keep this one buggie and buy another MD-UW :)=
