That's what I do most of the time. Sometimes I'll have several
related patterns use the same kit, but if I'm intending them for a
different tune they'll have their own kit. I don't trust myself to
remember that the kit I'm using today shouldn't be changed because I
used it in a pattern I made last May. I'd rather have the same kit in
several different memory slots rather than risk messing up a
completely different pattern that I'd totally forgotten about which
also happens to use the same kit.

Exactly, except I also put in the tempo as well. I'll name a kit
something like G08 132 so I know which pattern it goes with and what
that pattern's tempo should be.

As long as you don't save the kit that shouldn't be a problem (but see below).

I don't really use the song feature. What I do is put the related
patterns in a row and switch them manually as I'm playing.

Well, just in case I -do- screw up my kits, I do this constantly.
Even without using the Turbo button on the MIDI interface, which
basically never works for me, it's still pretty quick. Backups are
your friend.
