machine drum - API/SDK ?

machine drum - API/SDK ?

2009-03-22 by miguel lito

hi folks

i was wondering if anyone has ever discussed with Elektron product team letting users program their own drum synth machines? Not necessarily the whole machine operating system itself, but I was thinking how nice it would be to be able to program a better midi machine for example. Well I guess this post is goign to ask two questions:

a) who can we push to release an API/SDK that would let people program their own "machine" for real, not just a "kit". anyone reading this from elektron please comment :)

b) what i want from a midi machine is for it to record pitch inputs for each key I play in real time per step. Maybe I'm just missing something but I can't find a way to do this easily. What I do now that sucks is record the note timing for the melody, then do parameter locks for the note value at each step. total crap and unmusical. It should be easier to plug in an external midi keyboard and record a melody into the midi machine

yes i've definitely used it and it's very cool.

but wouldn't it be also cool if we could get some of this into the machine drum via an upgrade and not spend an extra $1500? it could even be easier to use and musical to have integration like this.. an SDK to build our own "machines" and sysex them is the key...

Well, all he's doing with that device is sending sysex messages.
If you want the type of functionality you're mentioning you're either
going to have to settle for less or get into it.

I doubt you could convince elektron to build up a custom SDK just so
that you can play notes.
As for creating new machines, I think that'd be a great idea for the
future.

I don't think a custom SDK would be required. I assume Elektron already
have a SDK which they use themselves.

I agree it would be quite cool. Has anybody asked them?
