Ok, i've been bitten by the MD bug so im pretty sure I'll be aquiring one sooner or later here... until then i was just wondering if the Machinedrum is able to do tablas at all? Have any of you guys made any tabla kits? Do you have any samples of them online? I'd love to give em a listen. thanks. - Brian

Brian The Machinedrum is a great machine. It doesn't do any kind of realistic tablas though...You could probably make some interesting tabla-approximations on it, but they would still sound like a synthesizer, rather than real tabla. I've actually studied tabla off and on for a few years, and after playing - even for a few months - you can really tell when someone is actually playing or using a sample. If you are looking for real tabla sounds, I'd recommend a sampler at least. Also, go to www.sonicstate.com and search for Talvin Singh's Abracatabla CD. It is a great sample CD of tabla and a lot of other percussion. -brent Once upon a time, brianefrank wrote the following: > Ok, i've been bitten by the MD bug so im pretty sure I'll be > aquiring one sooner or later here... until then i was just wondering > if the Machinedrum is able to do tablas at all? Yeah thats great, electronic sounding tablas are perfect. I just really like the feel of tablas within a song. Thanks for the tip on the sample CD, I've been looking for some good percussion samples as well. --- In elektron-users@y..., "W. Not too long ago someone on the Yahoo Sp-808 user's group found some guys in India that make electronic tablas. It's a little drum machine with sequencer that makes all orts of tabla sounds. I would not be surprised Talvin Singh uses one of those. If you look at the old posts of the Roland Sp-808 you will definitely find it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Though he may use "electronic tabla" boxes for a gimmick or an "effect" I can guarantee that most of his tabla in his music is actually him playing the drums. I've seen him play solo tabla live and he is quite amazing. He is a classically trained tabla player, playing since he was very very young. I've seen the "electronic tabla" boxes and they're pretty dumb if you ask me. They are several hundred dollars, and they offer around 10-15 different rhythmic cycles and allow you to change the tempo of each cycle, and sometimes offer a different variation (or kayada) of the cycle. They are used mainly for people practicing melodic Indian instruments like sitar, santoor, bansuri, etc. They are essentially a fancy metronome. They do not, however, give you any freedom to program the sounds yourself, so I would still recommend using a sampler for this purpose. -brent Once upon a time, Flavio Alvarez wrote the following: > Not too long ago someone on the Yahoo Sp-808 user's > group found some guys in India that make electronic > tablas.
