With $1200, I would go for an effects unit or two.  An MPX1 ($700), for example, or a TC electronic Fireworx (closer to $1000).  I don't know what Eventide offers in that price range.  You've got two great two generators or sound makers, now you should invest in a good sound "mangler".  Go for quality (can't go wrong with Lexicon/TC electronic/Eventide) and the capability to really transform sounds rather than just delay, reverb, chorus, etc.

Samplers have a healthy learning curve, no matter what brand, and unless you really want a specific sound, you'll spend too much time pre-producing sounds than making music.  I have two samplers, so I'm no against them, BTW.  I just think you'll get more fun out of a good FX box.
