Re: [elektron] Syncing MD, Cubase and other gear

Re: [elektron] Syncing MD, Cubase and other gear

Yeah, I'm having bad problems too, with Cubase VST5/32 generally in terms of timing:-

1) Has anyone found Cubase SX to be better? (I'm about to upgrade)
2) Does the Midex midi interface improve things much, or just a gimmick? (I'm using an Emagic AMT8, but not with Logic)

From all that I've read, seems you have to sync Cubase to the MD, but then its dependent on how effecient / responsive your pc, soundcard ASIO drivers and midi interface are...

3) Does anyone have an example system that gives tight sync between Cubase and the MD?

Thx, Andy

  Hi!

I'm the lucky owner of a MD since a few days now and I finally got to
experiment the use of the MD and Cubase. I knew Cubase has everything but a
tight MIDI clock timing, but this is badd...
What do you reckon to be the best setup?
I want to slave more machines (like the Virus and my 03D) to the same sync
channel as the MD and Cubase, but then the timing is awfull...
If I sync Cubase to the MD, MD is tight as hell, but the rest is crap.

Any solutions thought of my other MD users?

  Thanks!

  Jasper

Try usb devices like for instance Midi-man's Midi sport . They have the best midi timing as far as i know!

Normally I am a Logic user, but I bought the Cubase SX Crossgrade
because the price was really nice.

Cubase SX 1.05 and my MD are very tight. I made sure to remove the
port filtering in Cubase, so that non-emulated MIDI ports show up in
in the device list. Using emulated ports could be a cause of erratic
timing in SX.

> 3) Does anyone have an example system that gives tight sync between Cubase and the MD?

Yes, mine is Cubase SX 1.05. MIDI interface is a Unitor 8 mkII. What other
details would you like?

Mmm, what exactly do you mean by this? Can't find this setting anywhere...
So, do you sync cubase to the MD or vise versa?

Thanks,

Jasper

It's not a setting, per se. Instead of me repeating the instructions,
just check this thread on the Cubase.net forums:

Hope it helps...

I thought that the machindrum had timing problems when acting as a slave? Or
was that sorted in an os update?

Not here. I am consistantly synching as slave from both Logic and
Cubase SX and have no timing problems.

Have had no problems in OS 1.11, and still works good in OS 1.12...

What problems have you heard of?

***AFAIK This just could be me getting confused.....

I thought I had read that there was some trigger delay problem when slaving
the MD, leaving it constantly sounding late...

But if it works fine with you, it can't be the case.....

Thanks,

Jasper

I've got an old Atari 1040ST running Cubase through a Steinberg SMP24
SMPTE-sync/MIDI-expander. That's got as tight a lock as anything I've ever
used -- regardless of whether you're talking software or hardware. Rock
solid; can't beat it.

In fact, if I were sticking with only MIDI (and not so many VSTi's), I'd
probably chuck everything else and just use that as the brain of my setup.

Hi!

Actually, I used an Atari too until last year. I got rid of the atari
because of lack of space and I was recording to my pc anyway...

Now to get a bit more ontopic, I changed the preroll parameter in cubase and
it's a lot better now. Not rock-steady, but okay enough for the moment. I
think I'm gonna get a midex interface, that has this hardware timing control
thing...

Thanks all, for your help!!

Jasper

I have SX and the Steinberg Midex 8.

Cubase and the MD sync well in each direction.
