using my MD

2003-01-07 by nycthinker <jenscaturro@earthlink.net>

Hi everyone,
I'd like some feedback on a track I am working on. Just looking
for an honest opinion about it....

I liked the sample reduced bird sound and the bass flow thingy with a
little bit reduce. They kind of fly through the song as a little
treat. I also like the vocal part. Is that you? Are they samples?
What sampler?

But the lyric got boring to me. I was hoping in the end I would know
something. I would say you need a puchline, not that it sounds like
a joke.

Almost like Yo La Tengo however, with a little Beth Orton.

Me likee the track. Very well done. The ONLY thing I
don't like (and this is just a matter of personal
taste) is the pitch shifting treatment of the vocal.
Although it is very well done, I like the vocal better
when it flows more naturally. By the way, if this is
you singing, you have a great voice.

Can you tell us which parts use the MD, and what else you used?

(Done in Protools LE)
I used the MD for the main drum beat, ride cymbal and noisy
open hi hat. Also used a few of the effecty MD sounds as
fills/downbeats which I ran through a delay to give them a bigger
sound. (Low sliding bass/percussive sound near the beginning
and the chimey/twisted sound between the first two vocal
phrases.)

The bass comes from an SE1X, the dark keyboard is from a
Nord3 with some delay. I sung the vocals one word at a time,
autotuned, looped and time stretched them in spots.

I used some vocal outtakes like tiny little lip and breath sounds
as percussion fills and a sample of a camera snapping mixed
with the chimy/twisted MD sound.

There are two creepy orchestral samples taken from the
soundtrack to "Raiders of the Lost Ark." One is a string slide and
the other is pitz strings.
