Tom tom club

2003-02-11 by oldmanfury <erinys@silcom.com>

I was deep in SDS land yesterday when I realized that between my two
Simmons boxes, I now have 7 Toms. That got me thinking - what the
hell do you use toms for? The Simmons drums are easy to warp into
other sounds... but the MD has HT MT and LT... none of which get used
much on my machine. Of course, you can warp these into interesting
sounds, but I never really use the preset toms.

Here's the question: What type of music would actually use all three
toms? I use an occasional tom, but _never_ all three. Maybe I'm too
entrenched in one specific genre? Maybe I need to try bosa nova?

-gerald

p.s. I hope elektron wasn't too upset by the fact that you
kids 'backdoored your way into divulging their well kept secret. At
least, knowing _what_ it is doesn't diminish my anticipation.

I used them all once after listening to the Cure. My fiance was
listening to them alot so I decided to try to do one of thier style
drum tracks with an echoed bass from my virus. I did from high to
low toms. I guess you can always do that kind of tom pass if you are
going for real drum sounds. They have a nice ring and can add a
tribal sound to a techno song i guess. Just some ideas.

I use 'em for tribal/hand drumming type sounds, personally.

Generally set them pretty low in the mix or else they tend to
dominate.

if elektron were actually trying to keep the monomachine a secret
they were wise to become musical instrument designers and not spies.

Yes, a good way to create nearly subliminal bass.

Also, I like making on deep quick tom sound for emphasis, before
changing parts in a song. Picked that up from listening to
Bad Religion, The Gray Race.

I'll have to try that out. Probably more interesting than the
standard reversed cymbal :)

I use them constantly. Tribal techno is all about
them, plus you can have lots of fun in electro with
toms also
