Let us all jump off bridges tonight...

Let us all jump off bridges tonight...

2003-03-02 by (El Dee Bee) Shaughn Struble

In January, I corrupted the memory of my SID, and had to dump everything
off of it. Only a few of my patches were backed up, and obviously not the
newer/better ones that I was using in the songs I was working on. Since
then, I haven't felt like making any new patches or writing any songs.

Though, tonight, I have tried to make new patches... and to recreate old
ones. I didn't come up with a single patch tonight. :/ Everything I tried
sounded horrible and bad.

Now I'm just sitting here listening to a loop I made with one of the old
patches and being sad. Anyone else do this?

I have done this many times. Which is why I always listen to my own tracks. When I make them with whatever gear, at first I might think it's great. But in the end I was just having fun. It's always good to rest. Take a break. Or try another system or approach.

We've all been there. As someone else suggested, take a break. Go for
a walk, read a book, go drinking with friends. Just don't think about
music for awhile. I always find it goes in cycles where I'm either
making music or listening to music (other people's, not my own.)

It's the whole "you get out what you put it" aspect of creativity. You
need stimuli to produce. You can't just create for creation's sake.

Also, be sure you save all the patches you think are "horrible and
bad." In a couple weeks you may go back and find they were actually
pretty neat.

After you lose some data it's also best to never approach the situation
with "I'll recreate it all" attitude. Just have fun, that's where 99%
of the good stuff comes from anyway.

Move to quarantaine
