2nd broken machinedrum in a row

2nd broken machinedrum in a row

2003-03-23 by jupitersounds

i bought a machinedrum about a month ago, got it, and it died in
about 5 minutes due to a bad fuse. sent it back, took them 3
weeks to get me a new one, got it last night and it died about 24
hours later.. just now, for reasons unknown. it seems like for
1100$ they would at least test the damn things or something.. i
love it, its an amazing machine when it works. unfortunately it
doesnt. i noticed the bottom of mine got fairly warm, is that
normal? just when i was getting into it.. i had planned on
programming the night away then BZZZT. fuck this

I'd be you, I'd make my electric installation checked.

My little finger says you have spikes of voltage/current that the fuse of
the SPS-1 doesn't like.

You have 2 solutions (if it's really the fuse):

- either you buy a stock of fuse and start to change them regularly as they
blow.
- or you use a (real) power conditionner/filter

Eventually you can have a MD that is prone to fail more than others, but I
feel much more a spike is responsible.

when i sent the first one back to elektron they knew the problem
before i gave them the symptoms.. that batch of MDs had too
small of fuses installed at the factory, i know ive seen others
post that they had the same problem on this mailing list, i have
several sensitive old analogs that run fine, the problem is not in
my electrical setup.. ive owned more gear than i can remember
and ive never had such problems, all previous and current gear
runs off of the same electricity. i think i just have incredibly bad
luck..

the only reasonable thing why they ship the ones with the bad fuse value, is
they can identify themŠ

To add with the fact they shipped a lot of MD with the old firmware too.

My MD had the bad fuse, and it's been working fine so far since it
was replaced. I certainly hope it doesn't blow again as sending it
back for repair involves disputing customs charges with FedEx..a very
lengthy process as I'm finding out. Hope you get your MD working
soon! -Scott

Just an FYI,

When I sent my MD back for repairs I checked the "Product Return" box
on the fedex paperwork. After that I didn't have to deal with it at
all. So for anyone out there thinking about sending it back, be sure
you check that box :)
