MnM MIDI confusion

MnM MIDI confusion

2004-03-18 by starpawz612

ok, when i plugged my mnm into my cheezy yamaha psr-510 midi keyboard
things seemed great off the bat. i was recording MIDI from my
keyboard and the notes were playing back inot it, I could even get
different instruments out of the keyboard using PCHG and fancy jazz.

then i hit some shit, i don't know what, and all of the notes in my
MIDI tracks turned to "---" ... and anytime i try to record new notes
or lay notes down using grid based composing i get nothing but "---"

i have the keyboard's midi sending only to OUT (CH9) which goes into
the mnm's IN (CH9, set for AUTO TRACK).

i know there are a ton of MIDI settings on the MnM and just as many
for my keyboard (i can rattle them off if it would help the
situation), but has anyone experienced "---"??? i'm bumed because it
worked so well straight off, and now it's a huge mess :[

thanks for any tips!
j.ordan

the manual has been read and i didn't see anything about "---" ...
forgive me if i missed that useful page .. . . and please provide me
with the number ;D

so when you're not clearing patterns by mistake, you're clearing all tracks'
MIDI trigs? ;-)

"---" just means there's no note trigged on that step. it's typically
only seen in trigless steps (i.e. parameter tweaks only) and note-off
messages. it can be accessed by pressing FUNCTION+STEP; which will turn
the step LED to yellow as well. but this will only "---" a single step
on a single track. I don't know how the hell you "---"ed all trigs
on all tracks. even a pattern clear won't do this (it will wipe the trigs
out entirely).  if there were a melody clear then maybe this would happen;
but that would still only be on one track...

anyway, it sounds like a bug (or some feature I'm not aware of either).
if it occurs again, try to document what you did to make it happen and
report it to Elektron.

mmk glad i didn't fuck something up, i thought maybe i got my
settings messed up somehow ... right now things are a little finicky,
i can only send pgrm changes on some of the midi channels, i'm gunna
try setting all the tracks to that channel and see what happens . . .

now for my next midi question:

i know you can set the MnM sequencer to control INT or INT + OUT or
just OUT, but is it possible to set individual tracks to _not_ send
midi data out? because I don't think it's possible to ignore
incoming data based on channel with my cheep midi keyboard (it seems
to respond to all of them regardless of how i do its settings).

ok thanks a ton for the help, !!!

you mean send prgm changes to the MnM or program changes from the MnM?

yes, go to the global menu and turn the channel base and span to "---";
that will set it so that the internal tracks don't respond to or send
on specific MIDI channels (but they'll still respond to the auto track).

I hope that works! let me know if you need more help :-)
