Replacing the 6581 with an 8580

Hello, I popped open my commodore last night and discovered that it has an 8580 R5 chip. I took it out and replaced it with a 6581 to see the difference, and it is totally noticeable. I am wondering if it is advisable to attempt to replace the 6581 in my sidstation with this 8580 chip. Is it possible? I have heard that there are SID PCI cards that will work with either chip. If it works, will my patches still be in there for me to hear through the newer chip? Casey
