my SID has died! - please help

my SID has died! - please help

2004-05-20 by Eddy

Hallo

Today i turned on my sid station and started messing around in cubase
with a track, i was happily changing patches and stuff then i
accidently left the focus on the patch number box and typed some
numbers then hit return (cant remember what i was acctually tring to
do, set locator i think), the nuber in the box wen i hit return was
139 or somthin (higher than 127 anyway) this resulted in my sid
station going a bit mad and displaying...

P>;0

I have had this before and resolved the problem by switching the sid
off, wainting a few seconds and turning it back on again. it did not
work this time however and now seems to crash if i slect 'patch' from
the main menu, I seem to be able to select the 'system' menu thouhg.

In the past some patches have been corrupted because of this but i
simply loaded them back in via sysex dump, this does not work anymore.
my sid seems to have died and has no patches on it :(

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated

It sounds like the main OS chip is messed up. If you contact Elektron they might be able to send you a new one.

grrrr...this is the problem: the Sidstation only has 99 patches and the
OS doesn't take the value of the patch change number modulo 99. Doing so
would wrap 100 around to 0, 101 to 1, etc. Because of this, if you
try to access a patch greater than 100, you start corrupting the
memory. And apparently (from my own experiences as well), the
greater the value you try the further into the OS memory you get and
the worse you corrupt the OS. For example, I once sent the patch value
100 to mine and was able to recover it via a patch Sysex dump; but a
greater value rendered the OS unusable. Your previous experiences
described above seem to be similar.

So....I believe your OS will need to be re-installed; but you should
contact Elektron to be sure.

Good luck!
Joe

I used to mess my SIDStation up from time to time when I used a variable
voltage power supply (which would sometimes get plugged in at the wrong
voltage. Don't do this.) It would do something similiar.

It sounds like the patch memory is corrupted and the sidstation is
crashing when it tries to make sense of it. Since you can get into the
system menu, use that to clear the patch memory. (System->Mem->Clear or
something like that.) I bet it works okay after that.
