Tape-Style Recording on Machinedrum or Monomachine?

Tape-Style Recording on Machinedrum or Monomachine?

2004-05-25 by tj297

i know these are known for their grid sequencing prowess but is the option there for
regular old live recording (sequencing)? as in, press record and play. and if i'm using
the MD to sequence an external synth, can i do the same?

press and hold record, then press play. it will entire live recording
mode (record
LED flashes). then any drum trig buttons you hit and any parameters you
turn
(if in extended mode) will be recorded. and you might want to lay down a
simple scratch click track first (in grid mode), if you've got nothing
recorded.

as for recording other synths...you can't record the MIDI in port. but
if you
have mapped the MIDI channel controlling the synth to say track 16,
then pressing
the trig button for track sixteen (and any parameter locks you change,
such as the note value) WILL be recorded. so if nothing else, you can
record the rhythm of the
synth track and then fine-tune the note values in grid mode.

hope that helps!
Joe

thanks. so lets say i have a standard MIDI controller keyboard plugged into the MIDI IN
on the MD. then out of the MIDI THRU on the MD to the MIDI IN on an external rack
synth. i should be able to play notes on the external synth with the keyboard like
usual. but i can't use the MD to record those notes? strange.

yeah, a bit. but it was designed for on-board sequencing first and
external
sequencing second.

Maybe I misunderstand you, but you CAN record MIDI note values from an
external synth on the mnm. I do it all the time.

you can? cool! I was actually only talking about the MD, because the
full title
was clipped in my email viewer when I initially read it. and besides,
I have
the SFX-6 and my setup doesn't really require me doing such a thing
with it;
so I never knew this feature worked. but that's cool! you ARE saying
that
if you enter realtime record mode and then send it MIDI notes it will
record
them, right?

but does it quantize the notes to 32nd notes?

Well, of course - either to 16th or 32nd notes, depending on how you have the pattern set up on the Monomachine. I don't there there are any capabilities within the synth to allow unquantized events.

or 48ths or 64ths, if you have the resolution set up that way.

no, there aren't.
